Unoccupied blinds and tree stands?

ya i can see how geography can play a role in whether or not leaving a stand in place is a #### move or not. Out west here we have crap loads of crown land to get lost in and hike away from the vast majority or hunters and some spots I have left tempting items in plain sight I figure would be immediatley stuck in the pocket of anyone hiking thru the spot.... like a 20 or 50 dollar bill in a ziploc zap strapped to the small bush right beside the game trail where i sit at one spot.... hung there undisturbed for 3 years. I've done similar things in other spots to test the area for other hunters.... works well and I've only lost 60 bux over the years and not in that spot haha.

I figure I don't own the spot but have hunted it from the ground off the same moss covered rock for nearly 20 years and after getting jumped by a dozen or so wolves and far too many close calls with black bears appearing mere feet away..... it was time to spend the effort to hike in a two man tree stand, stashing the ladder components and harnesses in a spot where we could give the coordinates to any hunter I decide to share the stand with. If it gets stolen or destroyed by falling trees in bad weather.... it only cost 119.00 at canadian tire madness sale haha

I know 'of' a couple outfitters that staked out some Crown Land and built some pretty nice stands up in the trees.

I also know 'of' some of the folks that were minding their own business on Crown Land, and were harassed by said outfitters. Now even the guys that built the stands, won't use them, as apparently, someone has cut several of the support beams.

#### move all around, but illustrative of why I won't climb into a 'found' stand out in the sticks.

Cheers
Trev

I think it best to move on from that particular stand. Not because you’re unsure of the etiquette, but because the CO’s might decide to drop through the area, and baiting is unlawful ( in BC ). Why be hassled for something that’s not of your doing? My 2cents...

The trouble with leaving stands in the bush is that it implies ownership
of that spot. If you don't think so, hunt that spot and see if he doesn't try to run you off. He's hoping that your good nature will keep you away so it doesn't come to that.

Of course he could be a true gentleman who completely understands that he doesn't own the bush. In that case I suppose he wouldn't mind if you used it. That's sarcasm btw.

I could hang 20 stands and claim some serious territory. It would work on most people, but it's still a #### move. That's why I've come to believe that all stands should either come down everyday or become public domain the next day.

OTOH I mostly hunt private land if there's stands involved. I catch you in my stand there'll be hell to
pay.

I agree 100% with this post.

Are we talking about a blind or stand that someone bought and humped into the bush and set up?

I've found a couple of those this hunting year and last years scouting/tail end of the deer season, I won't use them and keep moving. This year I've found a handful of tree stands people have built, 2x4 and pallet or plywood construction. I have sat in a few of the older ones after checking the sturdiness and structural integrity of them, if someone was there already I would move on. Just like I have when out hiking and I run into another hunter on foot that is there first, I will always mark them on my gps and observe any game trails or tracks, scat.

Personally I don't enjoy sitting in a tree stand as much as I enjoy sitting on the ground behind natural cover, or walking quietly through the bush. So I will usually avoid a tree stand in favour of those options anyway, but I might be building one on family land I hunted this year. As it's a great spot and a tree stand would be handy in this spot.

I won't use a stand or blind I find on public land, but I have no issue hunting the area if someone isn't there first. The equipment is yours, the land is ours.

Exactly how I feel. It is just bad form to take advantage of somebody elses work or gear, thats just being a lazy a$$. Get or build your own. Having a stand doesn't mean you own the area though. I will not use your stand but I will hunt the area if you don't happen to get there first on any given day. If you are in your stand when I show up I'll be moving on.

This is how it should be. Posts like this need a "like" button.

What about the posts with the the hunters name I see all over the water in popular duck hunting areas,? How long do they "own" the spot? I have been told opening morning is the extent of claiming a spot.

OP, if yer car or wife are just sittin there not being used...you ok with a stranger helpin himself?

I don't use other peoples stands or blinds, if I didn't build it or place it, it isn't mine to use. Besides that, most people are noobs and don't place stands or blinds properly.

Exactly.

Even more frustrating when some no nothing sits your stand on the wrong wind and burns it for you.

Lots of work goes into a proper set up, respect it and keep walkin imo.

I completely agree with this, one exception being if I find someone has put a stand on my property without my permission. In this case I don't use
it, but I do take it down and turn it over to the local police. I leave a note as to where the stand is and if they want it back they can explain why they
were trespassing on my land. If they don't claim it after the prescribed amount of time in regards to found property, then I will claim it.

Now that is a terrible example. How about you go to a public park and put up a tire swing do you presume that no one else would use it using your logic? I agree that it is not good form to do such, the point being made is it is on public land. Around here it happens a lot and all we ever do is with the person is wish them luck or Waidmannsheil.

True most noobs will put a blind in a poor location but as I pass my mid 50's, sitting no a stool, stump etc...on a frozen hilltop, a comfortable blind looks more and more attractive. Not too hard to spot a newbie blind as they will usually be too big, poorly placed with a quad track right to it as who actually walks anymore?...and generally a couple Red Bull/Monster/Gatorade cans nearby...

Umm... You can't bait for waterfowl or birds in B.C. I am happy to be corrected, but don't believe it is stated anywhere in the B.C. regs synopsis about no baiting for deer.
