Are there any 5.56/.223 rifles that aren't restricted? I am thinking of something that looks military (i.e. evil...I will try not to go on a shooting spree when I touch one) I would love to get an AR-15 but would like to have something I could use somewhere besides the range.

For semis, there's also the Mini 14 (cheap and easy) and the G36 (if you have a really big budget). Switch to bolt action and the list is even bigger. There's plenty of bolt action police sniper rigs to be had..

M96, XCR, Tavor, SIG Special, AR180b and the list goes on.

If this:

is non-restricted where can i purchase one and for how much?

...I hear 'ya.

Although I have a restricted PAL and could easily afford an AR, I have yet to warm up to the idea of limiting my movement because of what's being carried in the trunk of my car. If I head up to do some shooting at the gun club (about an hour drive from home) and then decide to go from there directly to the cottage (another hour drive, but in a different direction), having a restricted firearm along puts a damper on things ...that is, having to comply with the spirit of an ATT.

So, I found myself in a situation similar to your own ...looking for a non-restricted 5.56/.223 AR alternative that would let me enjoy the genre without the hassles of an ATT. I ended up purchasing a new Ruger Mini-14 and mating it with an aftermarket SCAR-CQB stock, a Trijicon Reflex II sight and a birdcage AR-style flash suppressor. Once I get the rifle back from my gunsmith (I'm having it refinished so all the components match), I'll post a few pics, but here's a picture of the same aftermarket stock from the manufacturer's website:

I realize that a Mini-14 is no AR (regardless of how much you dress it up), but if you accept it for the rifle that it is and can put up with a little less than laser-like accuracy, I think it's a reasonably priced non-restricted option for a semi-auto .223.

I've never shot a PE90, but I get the impression that it'd be a bit of a dull rifle to shoot and own. There's really not much you can do to tweak a SIG, they're pretty much top notch right out of the box, right?

I got to fondle/shoot a CQB this weekend... awesome rifle.
If there were no Tavors in Canada it'd be SIG Special hadns down!

But, I want that compact goodness :D

Right on the top notch part but not the dull part

If cost is a factor the 180B with a match trigger and good handloads will group around an inch. It is my goto varmint blaster and has been 100% reliable. Call John at Wolverine for availability.
