UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

Has anyone tried a semi-inlett 1892 stock from Boyd's? At less than $60 it may be the way to go.

Mine is 0 inlet :) Pistol grip stocks apparently don't fit straight stock recievers. I didn't think they were different but I'm not taking any chances.

I just got almost new Rossi ranch hand 44 mag so this mares lag is going to get a hand carved stock and Haida engraving's on the recever and i mite add sum gold inlay there will be no other mare's lag like it .
My Chiappa 357 is going to stay the way it is

Anyone have pics of these guns with full length stocks on them? Saw one somewhere on cgn and now have lost it.

carverk - I'd love to see your stock when it's done.

I will post step by step pic as i go it will be fun the engraving the metal is the part that takes the most time to do

I have really been toying with adding a fullish length stock to my .44... So tonight I thought I would do some experimenting. I either want a quickly removable stock extension or a full stock that is short enough to still allow belt holster carry.

I VERY roughly cut down a piece of 2x6 matching the stock profile and with a length of pull of approx 12.5", I attached this temp stock and tried the gun with some snap caps. As a rifle it is a good size handy rifle. But it is too long for holster carry.

I cut down the stock to 11.5" LOP and tried again. Once again as a rifle it was good, a little short compared to a standard LOP but still decent. Again it was too long for holster carry.

So once again I cut the stock down. This time to around 10.5"... This is getting VERY short as a rifle stock. I can shoulder the rifle and run through the snap caps pretty quick. There is an issue though. A standard lever action grip and hand motion is a little awkward. I did find that a modified grip could be used and actually works pretty well. The holster carry should be doable at this stock length too.

I will get the stock finished down a little further and attach the stock well enough to run some live rounds threw the gun and report back.

If the "stock" option doesn't work then I am moving on to a red dot. :)

I have seen a Lee Enfild with a hand carved red cedar stock that is so sweet and light!
I don't know if a fore stock on a 92 carved from red ceder wood hold up in the long run but it mite be worth a shot it wood keep it light. Hard woods are not the only way to go with a rifle stock

Are there any Rossi Ranch Hands actually available? I've seen some ads but they are all sold.

Thanks. The fit was a bit off... Meaning removal of material would be needed? Kinda hard to add to wood.

I can't remember exactly but I seem to recall that when the stock was connected it was not fully seated at the rear of the tang cutout....it could have been made to fit but then it would not fit so well on the gun it came off.

Both guns were Rossi made 1892 clones.

They don't seem to be in stock for very long.....best bet is to put an add in the EE and get on a waitlist with Gary at Wanstalls.

I can't imagine how it would hold up to any use. It'd look beautiful carved, but I suspect it'd end up gouged and chipped :( That'd be a pity, especially considering how much work even making a fore stock would be, never mind carving one.

the enfild stock is over 30 years old and it had lots of dings but the only damage on it was on the fore stock a small chip off a corner
when I get home I shod get sum pic of if it is still a master work of art and all knife finish !

this is what i see ....

http://www.wanstallsonline.com/product.php?productid=699&cat=9&page=3

it says it is a henry mares leg in 45 colt ... nonrestricted

henry is the company that makes them , it is a maresleg , and it's chambered in 45 colt .

i'm sure henry has a website with a more detailed description of the rifle .

i don't think he has any rossi's in stock ..... the rossi ranch hand is the one selling for the lower price .
