UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

I'm not 100% sure but isn't there a proper on and off direction for the rear sights? I could be way out to lunch though.

My front came off and on easy enough, haven't tried the rear. Maybe a little heat? Or penetrating oil?
 
Everything I read has you taking it off from left to right and installing it from right to left. Probably why I managed to rotate the barrel to the left, when trying to install the new rear sight.
 
I just got my Rossi .44 mag mares leg delivered today.At first blush,I can't see anything wrong with it.The wood to metal fit is not bad and the action and trigger feel good.If it shoots anywhere a good as it feels in my hand ,I'll be a happy dog.Tomorrow,I'll clean her up and reload some more cartridges because I predict shooting this puppy lots.She looks like a good mate for my model 29 classic but I'll find out for sure when I hit the range on Sunday.:)
 
Just about dun working on my Ranch Rand wen I drilled and tapped the barrel i drilled right throw the barrel ( oops!) so a test fire with the old string trick is in-order
I have to test it out be fore we go on a big deer hunting trip on the far northern part of Haida Gwaii if we don't sink in to the sea lol
the reflex sight is mounted looks funny but fast to get on target so im happy with it so far
 
I think you need to see a smith. That bbl is likely finished now.

No smith hear so its up to me or I would have had him do the drilling and tapping.
I'm going to do sum test shots with it
I know I'm not the first one to ever drill into a barrel and there rifle worked just fine
 
Love this thread!

Carverk, I would think a smith is necessary... but at the very least fps or accuracy will probalby be suffer due to the gases passing thru the hole instead of cleanly out the muzzle-end (unless you use the hole for your sight... blocking it).

No biggie the hole is tapped and ready for the mount
I will let you guy's know later how it work's out hope the CO-OP hase sum 44magnum in stock
I got a boat ready to go up north to my hot spot for dear
I'm making two deer call's last time we hunted there we got sum thing like 92 deer in one day
 
For future reference - figure out the depth you're drilling to, then wrap a ton of tape around your drill bit slightly short of that length. That way you have a visual reference to work off of when drilling.

Personally, I'd be fixingthe barrel, even with a screw in it, it's entirely possible with the pressure will be high enough to blow it out of the gun, or at least that would be my concern.

***** Actually - depending on where the hole is you can probably have the whole barrel sleeved. It's a lot cheaper than having a whole new barrel made. Doesn't take much time and there are some very good gunsmiths who do this for cheap. I think the one I heard of is in alberta.

I'm back in rocking Haida Gwaii just got a week or so to hunt so hope to make it one hell of a one day hunt now the deer have settled down from the big shake

hell just a bit off shaking lots of after shocks but there small
the earthquake was 7.7 all of masset evacuated it went smooth we all went up the hill with guns in hand just in case lol!
we all taken care of each other it made the evacuation smooth made for a long night
 
I took my new Rossi mares leg to the range on Sunday and shot 100 rounds though her.The rifle fed perfectly and I can't wait to take her out again.Yahoo.
 
Does Wanstall's have any "ranch hands" in stock? If not, are there any plans for another order ? I would be interested in one in .44 mag. Also curious how the custom stock sets some people had made turned out ? Is there an option to order a full buttstock from "Rossi", separately and install it yourself ? Thanks.
 
They seem to be bringing them in. Maybe email them?

I'm still modding mine. Made a separate post in the hunting rifles section but figured some people won't have seen it. This' glued/laminated plywood with stain and clear coat. Took a while but turning out beautifully. Still need to finish the butt plate and then considering making it into a takedown butt.

Saw one on the wall at Wanstalls today along with a Chiappa, not sure what calibers.....Nice wood Wally!
