UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

Depending on weight I'd definately carry mine in the brush with me when I go prospecting. I'm always hours if not days from civilization, I always carry some form of firearm when I go, in fact the game wardens reccomend it. This little beauty in .357 or .44 magnum would be perfect as long as it's not too heavy. I still think a .357 magnum is the best caliber to carry out into the woods to scare off bears and if need be take one down.

woot for prospecting my friend. it weighs 4 pounds dry I believe, not too shabby at all in my opinion..

I know the old 357 vs 44 mag debate, but what's your reasoning on choosing 357 over 44 mag? I don't shoot either, but everything I've read says 44 mag is more appropriate for a defense gun, and being a rifle means you don't have to worry about recoil as much as in revolvers.

For black bears, I doubt you'd notice a difference at defensive ranges.

For a griz, even a 44 mag is a little 'light' and the bigger hole extra horsepower might be a real asset.

He lives in manitoba, the lower recoil and cheaper ammo (to allow lots and lots of practice :)) might be a better option as black bears are the ones he'll have to deal with mostly. (and if something bigger comes along it'll still likely do the job)

For bc, I would choose the 44. (and in fact i did :) ) There's a good chance of running into a larger bear here.

Good reasoning. Always good to get a new perspective on things.

I went with 44 mag as well. One of our regular hiking routes saw a hiker get attacked by a sow grizzly a couple years ago - it only stopped because the bear bit through the can of bearspray strapped to the guy's leg and it exploded in her mouth:eek::eek: The route is almost vertical so a nice light little carbine in a big cal will be appreciated :p

We should find that bear and spraypaint "FAIL" on the side. :)

Well this is the thing, there's lots of places that really favour having two hands free and it's a bit of a pain to carry even a light slung rifle. Something like this would be wonderful.

I would imagine a backpack style might also go over very well for the atv'ers.

Some one mentioned about a long butt stock for these, is there any avaliable? Has anyone looked at making an over the sholder holster?

do you mean a scabbard? they can be bought or custom made. there are some in the states specifically for the ranch hand that have a back scabbard set up.

wanstalls is working on the long butt stock but they will come in sooner or later.

Exactly for the most part , mostly black bear with the occasional brown bear(Bull moose is probably more dangerous). I also feel .44 may be a little harder to handle and get good shot placement vs the .357 which I'm more familliar with.

Right now I carry my Dominion Arms outlaw one barrel with lighter shot the other with a slug. But it's kind of heavy and you get one warning shot, one kill shot. I'd rather not shoot anything if I don't have too. And it's not all that practical to carry. I'd much rather take a pistol if I could.

I guess in summary I don't want a pistol that exceeds my ability to take a good shot and more importantly a good followup shot. With that said if my only choice would be .44mag I'd get one regardless :D. I'm pretty sure a good shot with a 180gr .357 cartridge would work just fine in my situation. Even a .22 to tickle it is better then nothing. Then again I've survived just fine now for 25 years without shooting at one.

I cant get the Rossi full length stocks this order. I have sourced out some other stocks that will fit on any Rossi 92 model, but Im concerned the colour of the wood and the finish may look different....still looking...

he has them in stock:

But they're restricted because it 'uses a pistol action'.

So our beloved CFC masters have deemed a rifle the size of a big pistol to be unrestricted, but a pistol the size of a rifle to be restricted.

Are the RCMP retarded? I'm not sayin'... i'm just sayin'....

Ya...I know that they have "The Circut Judge"....the link goes to a lever action .410 (for me is did anyway) that looked pretty cool
