UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

Got my scabbard

Got my scabbard/holster the other day. Looks o.k. but it was a bit light in colour for my liking so I slathered it in my favorite "Bear Fat &Weasel Piss" mixture. Looks better now, Future plans are to find a local leather worker and have a hammer loop installed as well as some bullet loops on the shoulder pad. :D

is the taurus security system on the new ranchhands?

Yup. Just picked mine up today and basically its a little allen key with the hole... you can pick those up at Princess Auto or Crappy Tire if you ever lose both keys that come with it. I'm not a big fan of stuff like that, but it seems completely out of the way and you don't really even notice it.

So..... THANKS WANSTALLS for the efforts and good service. Haven't fired it yet but want to say a few things: other than pistols I don't normally keep cardboard boxes for things I buy. I will be keeping this one, as it is just too humorous that it has 'THIS IS A HANDGUN' written in big black letters. For those who haven't got theirs yet it also has a tag right on the rifle that tells the dealer to recieve and sell it as a handgun. Ah, America. Anyways, the fit and finish is exactly what I expected from a Taurus, and if they would have put about twenty extra seconds more into sanding one part of the wood I might say even better than expected. Frankly so long as it cycles I don't care cuz it's getting its first scratch tomorrow morning. This will be no safe queen. The greasy goopy rust preventative seemed a little overkill, but nothing a little rubbin down with oil won't fix. Some people have mentioned 'smaller than i thought' various places I've read and I'd have to agree. This will be a one hand shooter or from the hip with two. Two handing at full arms length is a wierd and awkward feeling.
Thanks again Wanstalls. Now you guys gotta get me a normal sized loop, that oversized ugly thing has GOT to go. :p

The loop kind of grows on you somehow but the best move might be to get a metal fabricator to reshape and weld it a bit smaller but not quite regular size.....

I may be using the wrong terminology here. When I say "hammer loop" I am referring to a small leather strap or thong loop that is attached to the scabbard in the area where the hammer sticks out the top and which hooks or loops over the hammer to prevent the gun from bouncing out if you are climbing or riding in rough territory. Like the type I have seen on six gun holsters. This scabbard comes with straps to strap it to a quad or bike (or horse, I suppose), and will likely get bounced around pretty good from time to time. I would hate to see my Mare's Leg get bashed on the rocks!

Brief range report.... so I was going to load up some test rounds this morning but there was a bunch of 240grainers all ready to go that I forgot I had. I couldn't resist poppin a few off so away we went. I don't have a mic right handy here now but the cartridge oal must have been too long... it wouldn't cycle worth a damn. I'm not talkin a jam here or there, rather 50% or more jamming on feed. Those rounds were loaded for a revolver, but to the best of my memory well within max length. I never put a hard crimp on my rounds either, so that might explain a bit too I'm not sure but I doubt it. There's no such thing as a feed ramp on these things but it looks like seating a little further back may make a difference. Anyways... I think its a little early to be too judgemental- once I do a few dud sizing/feed tests I'll head back and put some numbers up.:)

I understood what you meant rickshaw, I was referring to gunny's post above mine where he was looking for a smaller looped lever. I had the same thoughts originally but I've grown to like the rounder loop though I think it could be reduced a bit to make it less bulky.

Spent the last hour(s) getting to the bottom of the problem. Cartridges were definitely within the 1.61 the manuals state.... of course I just realized my notes are not here but I think i was running 1.58 somethin. Anyways, I then thought the JHP's might be the problem as the large exposed lead nose was getting a little beaten up cycling them through. Oddly they became more and more reliable (but a little shorter too :p). Tested some 300grn's and seated to 1.60 as recommended, tried deeper, tried more crimp... they were worse than ever. So I thought perhaps it's my 30 year old brass.... grabbed a brand new case and due to my impatience to press a bullet just threw it in there and tried it. It too hung up. The problem was obvious and lay at the rear of the case, as it comes up the sloped grooves. I threw some grease on the rim and on the grooves and found this thing will actually feed empty cases so long as they don't hook up at the mouth. Anyone else find this issue? I'm tempted to break it down and take the tiniest smidgen off the top edge. If you hand push an empty case it's pretty clear even from the sound where it's catching up. Someones bound to say cylce it harder, or faster etc, and I've tried. When it catches it catches dead...

ps, i don't think the sights could be any further out of whack. Yikes.

I really like your setup. Where'd you get it?

Well I tore it apart and cleaned'r up a fair bit. I'll see tomorrow if that fixes it.

****Just a note to anyone taking one of these down for the first time.... pulling the bottom tang out in order to get the hammer and stirrup out sure makes it easier! :p (i totally didn't realize it slid out first, duh.)

Thanks for the links guys... I too knew they were there but couldn't find them today:confused:. Used a text version found via google earlier that I won't post here... it sure wasn't the clearest. Anyways, I said tomorrow for an update, but ya know how curiousity keeps a guy awake... so I had to go out and try it. About a 95% improvement. Just the odd hangup now. That was with the original 240jhp I had all the original trouble with. Will make some brand new 300's with virgin brass in the morning.
Perhaps worth passing along: If anyone has trouble with ejection, you might want to check if your brass is worn. I noticed using the same old piece over and over testing this it rounded the rim off just enough that it wouldn't pop out anymore. Different brass with this test all worked good though.
Am gonna run it like this for a bit anyways. I wonder if mine was made on a Friday just before quittin time. :)

The smallest gun you can legally carry in the wilderness, without an ATC.

I think these things will be flying off the shelf.

Cochise Leather (US company) makes a nice holster for the MLs for around $140-$160 depending on style.

You can also legally hunt and plink with the ML in contrast to a handgun carried under the authority of an ATC.

The Henry ML in .22LR would make a good carry gun for shooting grouse & rabbits you don't want to waste HP rifle ammo on.
