UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

but may have to ask someone for some reasonably accurate dimensions from a VERY close copy.

Well i've got the exact gun in a 16 inch barrel (except with small lever and no saddle ring). Worse comes to worse i can ship you that if you need to know precise details. the only thing it won't tell you for SURE is where they cut the sight dovetails for the 12 inch barrel, but it's probably the same, and we should be able to figure that out precisely from the pictures (we know the barrel length after all. )

I can also take measurements from my gun - i do have a good ruler and also a good digital caliper.

One thing that would be important to me is being able to change the rear sights and still have the gun fit.

I may go ghost ring - i may choose just to swap out the current one for a fibre optic version. It would be nice to know that it didn't really matter what kind of sight you used it would still fit snug.

And of course you have to be able to 'clear leather' without elbowing yourself in the ear. :)

I'm excited to see what you come up with :)

You could just attach the belt loop to a metal ring and then go from that to the holster. I am not much into horses, but I seem to think that the same setup is used somewhere on the steering part of the gettup.

How do you propose to hold the gun?

For a ghost ring to work, it must be close to the eye - less easy to acquire as the distance from the eye increases.

I am curious about the grip and mounting position of this rifle... I was thinking to hold it with my arms extended and elbows slightly bent and positioned outward; weak hand on fore stock and strong hand in the usual position. Are you planning to mount it more like a rifle and pull the stock in closer to your shoulder? Maybe with the strong side elbow tucked into your chest?

A peep needs to be close but a larger ghost ring would work fine....push-pull would be the way to go for aimed fire with the sights.

A full stock is an option as well.

Here's some Mare's laig history to ease the waiting......

Depends on the ghost ring. There's lots of pistol ghosts and in fact, they actually make ring sights specifically designed to mount on the barrel of rifles :) But I really won't know till i see the thing and shoot it. However many of the mare's legs i see being shot in various vids are held not much farther away from the face than a pistol might be, so it seemed like one possibility. I have a side mounted sight here, i thought i'd just 'duct tape' mount it so to speak to see how it looked to the eye.

Just one of the possibilities. Hell - i might even mount a mini red dot on it and go for the 'firefly' look :)

Most likely tho i'll just replace the front blade with a fibre optic and replace the rear ladder sight with a fibre optice version that's more adjustable (like the Hi Viz version), to get a little better accuracy and low light performance. If i get good enough with the thing to take it hunting or to use it as a camp defense gun, i'll want a little better low light performance

well - one shooting 'expert' who shot an almost identical gun and did a review on it suggested he got the best results from a 'push-pull' grip with the gun in front of him much like a pistol. He claimed he was able to get very good accuracy. Check out this vid:

Now - i take such reviews with a grain of salt but several youtube vids of guys shooting theirs seem to suggest this stance is popular.

Again - only way to really know is once we've got 'em and we can play with 'em.

Wow - that was a great find.

Some really interesting things in there, and interesting that they introduced a swivel on the holster he had designed for himself.

From comments i've seen from those who have them, the mares leg is a little more functional than people first think looking at it.

I gotta tell you, gents:

When I first saw this thread I thought here is another gimmick like the shortie 870's that have flooded the market.

But the more I think about the gun, the more I find myself being attracted to it.

Needless to say I am now on the list and "in line" with the rest of you guys.

Good job Wanstalls, looking forward to getting The Call.

Well the key now will be to get as many in the hands of Canadian gun owners as possible - the more there are the harder it gets for the cops to reclassify them :D

If it is that low I might be able to afford a nice holster too!

Hmm.... and a copy of Zombieland on blueray!

pfft I wouldnt pay for zombieland, it was good to see the first time, but its one of those watch once in a blue moon (ie when you get your mares leg) movies.

Well they're going for 550 in the states, so it would seem plausible we should be able to get them at a decent price.

I'd love to get my hands on one of those! I'd go with .357 over a .44 mag though. But I am stuck whether I'd want a full stock or the cut stock. Too many choices ..

Can I be thrown on the waiting list with the rest of them?
