UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

Actually, no front-deck report yet :)

I'm uneasy about botching-up the installation of the new sights ... and still looking for a skilled somebody around here to do it for me.

How is everyone else making out with theirs?

I finally removed enough material from the rear sight and notch to get a pretty darn close POA=POI out to 25 yards which is the max range intended for me.

I also worked up a simple "holster" that eventually I will get made from leather.

Noticed my feedgate popped out, I was able to pop it back in, that is slightly worrying...

Anyone else? Feedback?

Feed-gate issues ...

Hi Mr. M

For what it's worth ... my "feed gate" (or whatever it's called) has the reverse problem. As I load-in rounds ... I have to "work the lever" about an inch in each direction after every inserted cartridge. Otherwise, the gate is totally blocked ... the just-loaded cartridge jams the inward movement of the gate for the next cartridge.

Cool little firearms ... but WTF is with their quality-control?

It's not a reflection on the Wanstall importers ... they had no reason to suspect this shoddy stuff.

Hey Boomer, are all your screws snug? It's good to check once in a while if you have any loose screws as they can cause issues....

aside from needing perhaps just a hair of clean up inside to smooth it perfect, mine's working flawlessly so far. Good feed, no load issues, etc. Still waiting for new optics, but mine seems to hit a little closer than some of the others. Still needs to be swapped out tho, but it's usable.

Airplane connection

So, you're in Kenya ... who wants to fly on one a them Braziian wildly-subsidized (by their government) small jet airplanes?

As opposed to one of our just-as-wildly-subsidized (by our government) small jet airplanes?

Hmmm ...

Maybe it's not your gun that has the screw loose after all....:D

Hey, don't get me wrong ... I'd take one of our subsidized rides over one of Brazil's similarly-subsidized rides. Prime Minister Harper does ... although I don't always agree with him either.

Hi. I am new to the forum. I have tried reading this thread, but it is way too long. I am very interested in the mare's leg for a pack gun. I don't want to get into the whole debate about 44 mag and cut off stock for bear defense. I actually believe the best bear defense for a charging bear is bear spray, but I would like to have a back up. The mare's leg is a viable option in places where I cannot pack a 45-70. I do have a few questions. Has anyone tried rechambering a 45lc mares leg to 454 cassul? The other is specific to the ranch hand
44 mag. What is the hottest load you guys have run through your 44 ranch hand? Would it be reasonable to work up to a 300 gr hard cast? I am sorry but this thread is too huge to search for the answers. How has the sling helped with aim? Has anyone successfully added a stock?

Thanks again

Welcome to the forum, Hungsolo.

Your idea of rechambering to .454 is an interesting one; I don't think pressures would be an issue as you gan get other Rossi '92's in the Casull cartridge, but I'd be interested in how it feeds. But again, you can get a Rossi in this cartridge. I am intrigued. :D

Well i've only done 240's, but they're quite manageable. I mean yes, you know the gun has gone off that's for sure :) But it's not wrenching your arm or anything like that. Not uncomfortable. I would imagine 300 grainers would be stout, but i don't see why you couldn't.

I have to tell you guys, i'm not as familiar with the 44, but shooting up some fallen logs and such it's performance even with 240 grainers at closer ranges is pretty impressive out of that 12 inch barrel. It blows large channels not far off shotgun slugs. I don't know that at bear defense ranges you'd need a hell of a lot more horsepower. It's always nice to have a little more 'juice' but I don't think you're exactly horribly UNDERpowered. :)

I'm hoping to get out and shoot a few animals with my 16 inch barrel and i'll know more how they behave on critters, but I'm thinking it's big enough for bear.

It appears that 240 is as big as it gets in Canada. The barnes buster and bullet barn 300 gr are bullets only. Must be reloaded. I am curious about the cost to rechamber a .45 to 454, but the rossi 44 is out of the box even though there are some quality control issues.
