I always thought that 26" OAL was the minimum

There is no 'minimum' in the law for rimfires and non semi auto centerfires. (although if you get short enough eventually they'll call it a pistol)

What it does say is you cannot MODIFY a firearm to be below certain lengths (the rules are a little different for semi auto centerfire, non semi auto centerfire, and rimfire). The law also says you can't go below a certain length by action of telescoping, folding or other similar action.

So - you can't have a gun with a folding or collapsing stock that, when folded or collapsed, is less than about 26 inches. You also cannot cut your gun down to be below those minimums (and there's seperate minimums for cutting barrels)

However - if a non semi auto comes from the factory below 26 inches, its' technically all good. The rossi is 24, the chiappa 23. If it were a semi it would be restricted, but it's not.

Neither folds or telescopes, so both are clear on that point.

Because it's a traditional rifle action, the police classify it as a 'rifle' not a pistol. Plus - you do need two hands to use it in a practical way.

Therefore it's a non-restricted, as it should be.

You missed one: The action has to be uniquely manufactured for that firearm. Taking an existing action from a different gun and putting shorty parts on it to make it under 26" is a no-no, even for a manufacturer.

So the police say. I'm not 100 percent sure that has been tested or is going to stand up in a court case. It would hinge on the idea of 'modification'. Dlask was going to fight that but i don't know if they ever did.

Of course - you wouldn't want to pay to find out :D So for practical purposes right now that would seem to be the case.

The more I play with mine the more I think an 11" length of pull or so would make this gun absolutely perfect, for me, so I am gonna mod mine and find out.

Anyone know of a place to pickup a full stock on the cheap?

I posted a WTB just curious if anyone here may know a source.

Great gun, my accuracy as a pistol is just not as good as I'd like, and I want to run HOT ammo through it and I am not keen on doing that free handed. :)

Yeah, 240 grain factory is quite shootable from that gun, but i can imagine stout loads would become a handful real fast.

I have seen one stock that was simply added to with a removeable end to make it standard length. You just use longer screws to mount it to the exsiting butt plate holes.
Could be a fun project. Might be challenging to get the holes aligned right.

Foxer, yeah the 240gr that I am shooting now are bearable, but I am getting some 310gr loads made up, those may be too much. :)

Not sure if anyone else has experienced it yet, but I have actually had the stock hit me in the chin if I don't pay 100% attention to what I am doing. I can only imagine how often it would happen with HOT loads. lol.

DOOK, I have also seen that mod, I am not sure yet which route I will go. I like the idea of being able to add/remove the extra stock length.

Anyone ever seen a folding stock on one of these? Would a folding stock then make it restricted since it would be under 26" when folded? Hard to tell with our non sense laws.

Truly a fun gun. Some teething issues with screws, and other things but I am replacing parts with better parts on an as needed basis.

Foxer, have you actually ordered your new sights? Are you getting the rear sight that replaces the safety? You gotta post up a range report once up and running with the new sights.

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a hockey mask to me :D :p

I've managed to keep the gun well away from my face, and shooting with the sling really helps prevent that because it's got to be far enough forward to create the desired tension.

But - I WAS toying with trying a slight cheek weld like i do with my 22 mares leg. I'll let you know how it goes. If the hospital has internet i mean.

It would make it a prohibited - not a restricted.

In fact - even adding a stock extension which could be removed MIGHT be interpreted as being a violation, but i'd be tempted to fight that one a lot harder.

Initially I looked into having a straight stock extension much like the original 'sten gun' stock (single peice of metal tube coming back to a flat baseplate with maybe a small recoil pad). It would screw directly into the back of the existing stock, and could be unscrewed and easily carried to switch from 'short' to 'long' gun mode very quickly.

I found out it was quite achievable, but gave it up after i started playing with the sling. I have a full stock carbine for when i want one after all.

I wonder how much more shoot able this would be with a red dot and the standard pistol type stock. Only issue I have come across is the crazy price of good red dot sights.

Been toying with the idea of maybe a 1x pistol scope, not sure how difficult that would be in actual use though.

It would be hell on wheels. There's no doubt in my mind. If you added a strap on the front for even better forehand control you'd have one hellacious little blaster. If you do the 'smoothing' work steve at steve's guns recommends, you would get an insane rate of fire in a very compact little package. Add the sling and people would likely thing you've got a semi auto 'submachine gun' if they weren't actually looking at you :)

I had a bushnell (just over 100 bucks) that went on a 303 for a number of years - worked great and stood up just fine. If it can take 303 recoil, it'll take 44 mag. No need to spend a fortune. I loved the 'shotgun' reticle - small dot inside a large circle. I found that was pretty great for quickly getting on target and making good shots fast.
