UPDATE: Rossi Ranch Hand Mares Leg

I got some S&B ammo and it is much better. The odd cartridge will refuse to eject, but most are working. I am still a little disappointed though. I noticed that if you eject a round a few times, it will stop ejecting all together. I am hoping this is to do with the projectile and not the brass as I am going to reload the .44 mag brass. I am taking it out this weekend to shoot it. We'll see what happens!

I had the opportunity to operate a .357 mag version of this...rifle? I'll admit that I was appreciative, but less than impressed. I couldn't hit POA to save my life, I couldn't shoulder it, let alone get a cheek weld, and it's too cumbersome to shoot single handed with arm extended. It's not a pistol and it's not a rifle. What it is, is the sofa bed of the gun world...something that is not better than the sum of it's parts/intended usage. A sofa bed, makes for a lousy sofa and a useless, uncomfortable bed conveniently in the same small package!;)
These carbines make for an interesting toy, and with practice and weird shooting stances I'm sure it could perform, but I thought "meh" when I shot it...and I certainly wouldn't pay anywhere near what they are asking for one.

This is the peep I'd like to install but I will need a sight base to get the front sight up where it needs to be.....

Foxer I seem to recall dlask possibly building some sight bases or taller sights?

What model is this? It's different looking than mine

It's an XS sight & can be had as set which includes a taller front sight to get a decent POI.
The XS part # for the set is LG-0001-5. I'm going to order 2 sets for my Rossi "Baby Carbines".
:)
I meant the rifle
Is the ranch hand an oversize bore too? I read that the regular rifles are .002 bigger bore and only shoot good with cast bullets.

On chiappa,s website I found they make a Marie's leg with a 9 inch barrel that's 21 inches overall its too bad it's nice. They also make a 44magnum with a 12 inch barrel that comes to 23 inches, is there a way to get them to make the stock a hair longer to make it canadian legal?

Is the 9" version restricted here? I've only ever seen one post about it but no one seemed to know. In a take-down version, it would be awesome!

You might already know based on all the previous comments, but for some reason Rossi ships these guns with front sights that are way to low.
That could be why you couldn't hit where you were aiming.

In stock form these guns require a push-pull technique similar to a pistol grip only shotgun.
Push forward with the front hand and pull back with the rear. I've shot a ranchhand with a bungy sling around my body attached to the sling loop and it helped make it more stable specially when working the lever as the rear of the gun was supported.

Once the sights are regulated I've found these guns accurate out to 100 yards on steel plates. The .44 is a bit more of a handful but the .357 is quite easy to control and in my opinion the best cartridge if you want to leave your ranchand stock.

If you want to spend another $100 on a butt stock it's not hard to unscrew the one bolt and swap out the stock.

The Non restricted Ranchand is already a bit under 26". I don't see a point in going under 12 inches in BC for a bush gun as that's the min barrel length for hunting here.

I'm pretty sure just from eyeballing it in person that a base of some sort will be needed to raise the front sight elevation.

As these are made for Rossi 92's as well as for Legacy Sports, Puma & Winchester 92's(Non-Angle Eject)
I'm quite sure I'll have no worries with POI. If anything, seeing as they are designed for 20" barreled rifles, the RH will probably shoot a tad low with the rear sight set at it's lowest.

The sets come as pictured with 2 aperatures + the front sight.

I see a lot of folks with a full size stock on their Rossi Ranch Hand Mare's Leg. Do any of you folk know if that same stock would fit on a Chiappa Mare's Leg? Got one coming from Wanstalls, and I'd love to have the option of a full stock.

If you know someone with a Rossi carbine, just remove the stock from theirs and see how it fits on yourn.
Same deal with a 92 Winchester stock. Then, at least you would have a good idea as to which stock to
order from Boyd's or Precision Gun Works.

Getting parts for Chiappa in North America ain't easy. You could check with North Silva as they are the
distrubutor for Canada.:)

I'm not sure which ones you are referring to because the ones I have were not made for Brazilian guns specifically..... I beleive the ones I have were made for winchester 94's but obviously they can be made to work on the rossi's 92's as well.

As for the front sight height, I'm just going from what I see placing the sight on the gun and then looking down the sight line in comparison with the stock iron sights.

It's like the issue with the ranch hand to begin with..... rossi uses the same sights as there longer barreled 92's and they end up shooting to high.
The XS sights are also designed for longer barrels so logic suggests they will also shoot high and that's what my eyeball says when I mock up the rear XS and compare it to my existing sights. It sort of stopped me from drilling and tapping till I figure out a front sight base.

I can't retrieve the post... Who was making a beautiful shoulder holster/back scabbard for the Mare's leg? It was displayed around 1-2 months ago but I can't find it here nor in the EE.

Well what do you know.... I just checked the XS web page and they do list sight for Brazilian guns now!
Let us know how they work out for you SS.... I have a feeling the rear sight will be similar to mine because I don't think it can get any lower then it allready is but maybe they provide a longer blade? Though I think around .5 inches is getting pretty tall and it still looks low from what I'm seeing....

Good luck!

No matter as for front sight height with the XS set-up as the front sight is thick enough to easily add extra
height to by using the MIG welder or JB Weld, then file 'er & then blue or paint to finish.:)
