Our club is trying to resurrect our trap a Winchester Western White Flyer V1524 handset, which had a broken carrier arm and because of that sat for several years. We got a replacement carrier arm from Western Retro, changed out the carrier arm. Drained and refilled the oil, lubed what needed to be lubed. Then we tested it.

Trap works great when set for straight away throwing, spread adjusting screw in the middle hole as per the manual. Trap throws exceptionally well. No oscillation at all it's good.

However, when we move the spread adjusting screw to the # 2 hole in the Angle Changing Disk (for standard oscillation) the machine begins to oscillate then it stalls/stops/sticks for a second or two then starts and oscillates again for 20 seconds or so then sticks. The machine always sticks/stops in any hole we've set it for. This shouldn't be happening and didn't happen before (to my knowledge). The conditions would indicate either a lubrication issue or a gear(s) problem. We have double checked the fluids and again oiled as per the lubrication guide. No luck doing that.

We need to get in and look at all the gears. Especially the oscillation gears/mechanical interrupter components & gears. I don't even know where these are located. They don't appear in the parts assemblies manual but have there own sheet in the manuals section of Western Retro. Doesn't say where they are located, how to get to them, or show any fully exploded diagrams for the trap. Anyone know where to obtain these, the drawings/diagrams I mean.

We tried taking off the gear housing cover we got the 4 Allen bolts out fine but we could NOT lift the cover. We don't want to be whacking it with a hammer or trying to pry it off as that may not be the correct way and we don't want to do damage to the unit or make our problem worse Does any one have any clue to trouble shooting the unit? Have an exploded drawing? Know how to get to the mechanical interrupter components??

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. We are DESPERATE at this point. Our shooting season only has maybe another 2 months to go. Our club is losing member as it is and going without a trap for the rest of this shooting year won't do us any good at all.

I've got email and phone calls into Ian at Western Retro but haven't heard a thing back as of yet. Anyone ??? Any help greatly appreciated. This is becoming a nightmare.

The manuals at Western Retro don't show a dis-assembly or exploded view drawings.

I am not familiar with your particular model, but it sounds like your machine just has an interuptor. This stops the trap from oscillating periodicaly to prevent shooters from timing the trap. Our traps have this feature, and can be disabled at the turn of a switch. Perhaps yours is working as it should?

Your trap indeed has an interrupter installed as james01 indicates. The unit is working fine as per your description. Don't mess with the gears unless you are a mechanic as they are timed and must be replaced exactly as removed. Google your model of machine and you should locate a manual. Let us know how you make out.

Ian Brotherson at Western Retro is your man.
Our club shipped our same machine to him for overhaul. Ours had very similar symptoms where it wanted to stall in oscillation. He replaced a gear and some bushings, it works like new. Trucking to Victoria and back cost as much as the repair work. We decided that it was probably a good investment to have someone who knows what they are doing monkey with taking the machine apart.
We had already installed one of Western Retro carousels for loading birds. Oh, do I love the fact that we do not have to ask for volunteers to go into the trap house to set birds.

Here's hoping I'll hear from Ian shortly.

Getting an exploded drawing or dis-assembly and reassembly manual would be great we're in the NWT so shipping is a major issue. If we can take it apart and identify what if anything is wrong and needs replacing and ordering just those parts would be a LOT cheaper.

I removed one of those a few years ago on the same machine. Unbolt the top cover assembly, remove the three gears,( I believe just pull up on them) the interrupter is below those three gears, pull it out, replace the three gears as you found them, bolt up the cover.

We got the four bolts on the top cover assembly out, but couldn't lift the cover and the associated parts off. Assembly X33W. The cover wouldn't move. Don't want to beat on it with a hammer or pry on it with a bar or screw driver. We need dis-assembly and reassembly instructions.

I understand the interrupter. I just don't recall there being a 2-4 second pause during oscillation. But if anyone knows how to take this apart so we can just inspect the gears we'd appreciate it.

Yes, it is suffering the exact same symptoms as our machine was. One gear and several bushings were replaced.
The Western Retro site has some information on critical assembly order, etc. but since we didn't try to repair ours I can not help with your disassembly issue.
Ian was good with texting or e-mail when we had questions, with some breaks when he was away.

At this point we can only hope we get some reply from Ian at Western Retro.

There doesn't seem to be anyone anywhere repairing these beyond Western Retro just seems odd that there aren't repair - disassembly/reassembly manuals kicking around somewhere on the net.

Our machine has always worked just as your video shows. We've shot thousands of rounds of Trap with no issues. Use and enjoy.
