Used cz 452 .22lr with Bausch and Lomb elite 3000 4-12x40 ap scope, worth $650?

Hey so I was approved for pal on the 8th, licence should be here pretty quick. I went looking for .22's (bolt) at grouse river and he suggested a Cz 455 ($400-$500 I think) and Another that had a forward and back bolt design(can't remember the name, few hundred more though). He also suggested me to a local gun smith.
So I went to the gun smith and we were talking and he was asking some questions, showing me some $200-$400 .22's. Then he asked if shooting was something I planned to do for a long time or just a short term thing. I told him I plan for a long time. He then recommended that I spend a little more on a gun and it will then last my lifetime, instead of buying a cheaper gun and I will have to then spend twice later on.

He recommended a used (only one little scuff on the stock and some scuffs on the scope cover, looked pretty much new otherwise) cz 452 22lr, with a Bausch and Lomb elite 3000 4-12x40 ap scope mounted on it. I believe it is a lux model as the fore end has a dip at the front, under the barrel. Do other models have that difference? It's not the trainer as he also had a trainer(452 or 455, can't remember. He said it was the exact same bolt mechanism though) and it was a lot smaller.

Is this gun worth $650? I don't believe that he would be selling a bad quality gun as his tiny storefront was packed with 8 people (someone had to move so I could step in the door).

Any info or thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks

If this is your first gun,(sounds like it is) .22 is the way to go (cheap to shoot and last a lifetime). Shop around, look around, handle some different makes and models until you find something you like. Personally I wouldn't spend that on my first rifle unless I was jumping right into the precision game of shooting. Savage, Remignton, and Ruger all have nice reliable and accurate .22's for a lot less than that. PS the scope hes trying to sell you would be used more for target shooting not plinking or hunting. IMO

The 3000 scope is like a 3rd generation. It probably has a 150 yard hunting parallax unless it has an adjustable objective.
The Lux will have iron (open) sights and the butt is a "hog's back" design versus the American or Classic which has straight lines.

Make certain there is clearance between the power ring and the bolt handle. I made that mistake.

The scope is good and could go for close to $200 alone, the scope rings anywhere from $20 to $60 depending, the gun alone in that condition is worth at least $375. Fair deal but not cheap once you also add the tax, as mentioned top dollar. I'd try to stay around $500 for something similar with a cheaper scope, but if you love the gun...buy it and enjoy.

I've got an older B&L Elite 3000 and I didn't pull it off my magnum to replace it
with the Zeiss Conquest I had.
If the scope is flawless, I'd rate the scope at a couple brown ones.
The CZ 452 should be worth around the $400 dollar mark.
It sure sounds like a nice set up.
See if you can squeeze him down a hundred with the taxes in.

If it is a CZ 452 Lux it would have come with some very decent iron sights which may have been removed to mount the scope, as a comparison I bought a new CZ 452 from a local dealer (known for high prices) and it came in after taxes at $650 and change. Also consider that the 452 has been discontinued.

Chris doesn't deal much, not sure he'd budge.

The whole "buy a gun to last a lifetime" thing is not really relevant (in my opinion). If you're a real gun nut you're going to buy, sell, buy something else, buy again, sell again, regret selling, trade....

The 452s are very nice guns. Less expensive Savage guns are also nice. There's not really a wrong choice here. If the worst "mistake" you can make is over-paying to a small business by $50, my suggestion would be - Don't over think it, and follow your gut. Did you like what he showed you? Go for it!

One you've bought, post pictures, a review and range report for the rest of us!

I would have responded sooner but I cannot comment on any threads on my phone for some reason...

Thank you for all of thoughts, very much appreciated.

Are there any sponsors that have any 452's for sale? I took a look at about half of them but didn't see any in stock. I'm pretty sure that I want a 452 as my first rifle. I also want a marstar Chinese sks n ammo but that will be in a few months I think. I want to get really accurate and do target practice. I'm not that interested in shooting stuff just for the point of it, I want to be able to put bullets exactly where I want them

I'll keep looking online for new and if I don't find anything better then i will go back and see if I buy the rifle if I can get a free case n lock or something. Can gun smiths do a cash no tax deal, or do used gun sales have to be reported?

Agreed.

If he was asking some kind of exorbitant price tag, that'd be different. But he's within a reasonable price range with a firearm in good condition. So long as everything works right, the bore's good, and you like the gun, I'd just call that little price difference the cost for actually getting to see and handle the rifle, rather than buying semi-blind online.

The 452 has been discontinued and replaced with the 455.
If you want the open sights I recommend the 452 , they come with the nicer tangent sights.
You might find the odd new 452 Trainer or LUX at a store.
The 452 Full Stocks and Ultra Luxs are long gone.

If you are just going to scope there are lots of 455 Americans around.

I have also read the CZ may be bringing back the Tangent sights for 2014 on certain 455 models?

I'm not too familiar with the CZ rimfire offerings (but from what little I know) if the rifle you're describing is a 452 Lux or Trainer then they have excellent iron sights with the edge going to the Trainer (tangent rear).
IMO $650 plus taxes for the package is on the high side but only you can see the actual condition of the rifle/scope. Does the scope have an AO (for closer focus/shots?). If the rifle has the original iron sights and you could get it for under $600 OTD it should keep you smiling for many years. No Irons....I'd be offering $525-550.
Pay once...cry one. I think that's how the saying goes. Good luck and post some pics!

I was fortunate to pick up presumably one of the last CZ 452 THVs that came into Canada. Like the Lux, it was discontinued I think in 2011, replaced by the 455 series. Mine is one of those rifles that should be good for life, and provided I have a son would be glad to pass it down. Very accurate, attractive and practical guns.

Price - laminate stock, naturally mine cost more - it cost pretty close, rifle alone, what the seller is asking for that lux. I'm inclined to say the price isn't a gouge but the inner cheapy that dwells in everyone cries out for less. So it's something you have to weigh over what you want, like, need and the little devil on the shoulder called buyers remorse. As to the question "Can gunsmiths do cash sales....?" Probably depends on the gunsmith, but I recommend not mentioning that on a public forum. If CRA is too busy to prosecute the Bronfmans billions of dollars cash exodus from Canada it must mean they were preoccupied anally administering the slivered beam up one of us peasants for a few pennies that no longer exist.

If it wasn't a 452 Lux but the regular 452 version I'd say go for it. The Lux version stock is designed to work best with open sights. Therefore when you look through the same gun with a scope on it, your cheek has nothing to rest against. For shooting off hand (standing with out a test) this fact is a big disadvantage to shooting accurately.

For myself, I prefer shooting 22s with a scope so this is not a configuration I would want for hunting.

I checked some sites and sent some emails around. I found a cz 452 lux new for 520 plus tax. I'm waiting on 2 replies for ultra lux's and thv's. Is that a good price for new?
When I go back to the smith I'll check for the iron sights, if I bought it I was leaning towards taking the scope off anyways so if there are no sights then I may just forget about it.

What does thv in cz 452 thv stand for? I looked around but couldn't find anywhere where it listed what it was.

Thumbhole Varmint - It mostly describes the stock design as well the type of barrel. http://cz-usa.com/products/view/452-thumbhole-varmint/
