So I've got three bolt action .22s in the safe. Am looking for a used semi-auto, say $300 or less. Lets hear your opinions on whats good/not so good. Have no problems getting an older rifle either; any suggestions there? Thanks all.

You can pick one of these....

Cooey 64,Cooey 64A, Lakefield 64B ,Sears 8c
Mossberg 51,151, 152, 352,
Marlin 990L
Winchester 490
10/22 Ruger
Savage 64
just to name a few. I have the first 7 makes of rifles and enjoy them all. Semis can be picky ammo eaters but usually you find the ammo it likes the best. Mine handles most types without hesitation.
I like the older rifles as they seem of more quality...but that's just me.

FOR A CLASSIC IN YOUR PRICE RANGE YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH A WINCHESTER 490 AND MAGAZINES ARE AVAILABLE IN EITHER 5 OR 10 SHOT. IF YOU WANT A NEW GUN GO FOR THE RUGER 10/22 YOU CAN ALWAYS UPGRADE THESE MARVELS OF ENGINEERING AND THERE RELITIVELY CHEAP! GOOD LUCK ON YOUR CHOICE:nest: BUT IF YOU HAD A COUPLE HUNDRED MORE TRY AND PIC UP EITHER A BRNO 581 OR 511 THERE ONE OF THE MOST COMFORTABLE GUNS I EVER SHOT OR A BROWNING AUTOMATIC IF YOU LIKE TUBE FEEDERS, REGARDS DALE IN T-BAY

Nylon 66

I have owned a few Nylon 66 Rem. over the years and of course it's only my opinion they are one of the best 22's ever produced , The Inuit people favor these over all others because they are reliable and do not freeze up in extreme cold .

I have 3 10/22's but my Marlin model 60 is by far the most reliable semi I own. Never had a FTF or FTE. Pretty good shooter, out of the box, as well.

This Stevens 87C has seen alot , and alot more is ahead...:D
I clean it regulary ( easy takedown ) and it always works and hits what I point at.
( I'd love to get my hands on a Mossy 151 for my next .22lr semi. )

I have 2 of these as well and they seem to be a very reliable rifle, fun to shoot with decent accuracy. FS

Marlin 795 for new under $300.

That Stevens 87C is pretty.
If I can find a cheap Stevens 85, I'd buy it. Takes the same magazines as my Savage Model 4

Another plug here for the older Mossberg 22 semi-autos. I have 3 - 151M's and a 351K. these are great 22's with few functional issues, and very respectable accuracy. Eagleye.

I'd say if you're into customization, then get a Ruger 10/22 since it has more after-market parts available.

Otherwise, get a Marlin 60 or 795, they beat 10/22 on price and accuracy.

Someone has to say it. 597 Remington better features and accuracy than most semi's available. But the old Mossy 151, 351 were very nice guns too. You couldn't give me a new mossberg.

Apart from aforementioned beat-up 152 Mossy I'd go with 597. Of modern ones it really is the most acurate fun semi on the market. But then again, 64th are so cheap its almost a crime not to own one.

Savage 64 is good. Got a new one this Christmas, and was surprised how good it is. My older 64 models left me unimpressed. This one, however, has changed my mind about them. Lakefield and Cooey 64's as well. Remington Nylon 66. Tube fed from the back, so no risk losing a magazine. Remington 597 is popular. So is the Ruger 10/22, though I'd choose the 597 if you don't plan to modify it. Marlin Model 60 is another good tube fed semi. Stay away from the Henry Survival. Makes a good paddle. That's it.

Thanks to everyone who replied!! Its good to see the older semis being so well recomended; that Stevens 87C sure is a nice looking rifle too. I had thought of getting a standard 10/22 and playing with it to make it look like one of those Russian sub guns, the PPSH? I've had a Nylon 66 and really didn't like the way it felt in the hand, maybe its just me. Cheers!

Kind soul that I am...
I'd let my cooey64 go for 300$'s.... It was upgraded (probably in the 60's) with a metal mag-well and, accepts current (modern) metal mags...

LOL!!!!

To be fair, I have "learned" to love my 64 (now, one of 2...) but, it is what it is...

$'s are the biggest difference...I bought mine (no, not yesterday) for 60$'s...is a 10/22 really 5x better? Maybe! For the semi .22 fan, you can spend more on aftermarket parts for some of them (10/22 comes to mind) if that appeals to you. I also have a Marlin (can-tire 200$'s in the day, model 70 so, it uses clips) that although it cost more than 3x my orig cooey64, is FANTASTIC. It'll eat any ammo you choose to cycle, accurate (huge blade up front so, I actually shoot better with the cooey) and so far (20 years...) flawless!

Internet wasn't an option when I bought the first few rifles but, now, you can read 'til your eyes bleed...

...for the record I am not anti-10/22 (they are fabulous...) I'm sad I have to have one to gain "street-cred"...
