Using 12 Gauge Slugs for Bear Defense? Here's a slug review you'll want to watch.

Great videos,I watched them all and enjoyed them very much! Your video quality is excellent and your style and narration remind me a lot of watching Richard Proenneke, from "Alone in the wilderness". I subscribed to your YouTube channel and look forward to seeing more great videos. Thanks for taking your time to produce such unique videos!

A great thread about various foster slugs including the Winchester Rackmaster (unobtanium in Nova Scotia afaict).

Interesting the Rackmaster & Truball have something quasi similar to the original minie balls of the 19th century - however the plastic bits for the Rackmaster & Truball are there only to provide a bit of support to the soft slug - the minie ball bit (culotte?) was there to expand the base of the minie ball into the rifling of a musket of the day. . .

I have been aware of the work of the guy who designed this foster slug mold overseas at the link below. I would say this is probably one of the better 'foster' type slugs out there (reloaded though). I realized he could also heat treat his slugs to a point.

Imagine that all you could ever get in terms of ammunition is this:

200908241745

Ordinary 12 gauge, BB Birdshot.

Well, I got some of that, but was I satisfied? NO! I needed something I could really use to “Reach out and touch…” Something that would penetrate at range with some accuracy.
I got a mold fabricated: 25.3mm thick Steel, drilled through at 16.5mm wide, and drilled right through to the other side.

Hello Everyone!

After wrestling pretty much all day with my iMac and it's "Glorious" Maverick upgrade (NASTY!), I finally finished editing and uploading the Brenneke 12 Gauge Slug review:

Thanks so much for all your feedback...I'll source some of those Canadian made slugs and see what I can do about testing them once the 4 feet of snow is gone from my rural range.

Cheers, and thanks for watching!

Awesome work Brobee. I'm looking forward to seeing what a Score slug will do, and your slug accuracy tests should be telling as well!

Great stuff as usual!

I wonder if the Rio brand slug is a little softer than average for a Brenneke?

I've shot some brands that went through wood and even sheet metal before hitting wet newspaper that barely deformed as much, OTOH I have a box of Clever Mirage "Palla Solengo" Brennekes that appear to be as soft as your typical Foster slug, although I haven't done any kind of media testing on them.

The black magic is suppose to be the cream of the crop for penetration. Probably hard to find in Canada though.

^I think you are correct 870P. IIRC, the classic rottweil brenneke should be ball park to 29 inches or so of gelation block penetration?

Good luck and many thanks to Brobee!

Thanks again Brobee. This is also reflected with a Dixie Slugs report with pretty much identical results. Seems I vaguely remember a gun magazine test of an Ithaca M37 (SRT?) shotgun with this product. Same results too.

Hey Brobee,
Really like your channel. I've watched the videos a couple of times now. Think you can review some of the Score slugs? Not sure if you plan on doing more slugs or not, but I'd like to see how these perform as they seem to be a reasonably priced shell.
Keep up the great work.

so where did Brobee find Rio Brenneke rounds in Canada? Or Federal Vital-Shock Flight Control 00Buck?

Here in Canada ammo availability is so frustrating! Consequently when I find something I like, I tend to hold a bit of it as it's likely there will be long periods of unavailability.

I bought several cases of brenneke's about 7 years ago from the shooting edge here in calgary (have not seen them there for years though). I have not seen them here in Calgary for more than 5 years. They seem to have good availability in the US though, and my audience from down there talks non-stop about the famous Brenneke so I wanted to include it's review in my channel. Sorry for the tease.

Then late last year they (TSE) brought in the truball penetrator; after filming my test with the tru-balls in October and seeing how well they performed, I went back and bought a half dozen cases. I did not clean them out though, so they might still have some.

Cheers,

Brobee

I'll buy some, but will likely have to wait until spring/summer to test them as there is now 5 feet of snow out at my range....:(

Cheers,

Not to terribly derail this thread, but does anyone have actual experience or knowledge firing slugs of any type out of an over bored barrel such as the Mossberg 935. It is supposed to have a 10 gauge bore inside until you get to the choke. Mossberg tech says the slug could "tumble" or get lodged somehow in the barrel. Seems like B.S. but possibly a sabot slug in a plastic wad would solve that problem. Note for bear, just for the range (3-gun) where slugs are called for. Don't want to blow the end of the barrel off. Thanks.

Nice work brobee! I've got a bunch of the rottweil brennekes and love em. I've also got some 3" 600 grain rottweil brennekes. I wonder how they'd perform? They kick like damned mule though.

Bump for ammo supply. I love giving them my money. Best customer service I've ever encountered.

I bought some of those challengers a while back, but haven't tried them yet.
