Using Chokes on a short barreled defense type shotgun? Worth it or a waste?

I have two 14" shotguns and I have the opportunity to buy chokes for the one (threaded for them), is it worth buying chokes for a short barreled shotgun? The Mossberg 14" Modified versions sold out really fast just wondering why that is and if I should think about buying chokes for my 14" Fabarm. I'm going to buy the brake as it looks cool so I'll be paying for shipping anyway, was thinking about buying a Mod choke too. What do you think?

I'm certain chokes would extend the effective range but would you buy them for a 14"?

I put a full choke on a 14" bbl and was able to get a bunch of grouse with just headshots a few yrs ago. Worked pretty well, but damn loud with the short bbl and bo hearing protection.

A choked barrel might not matter that much if you are shooting buckshot or slugs.

But you'll notice a big difference when shooting birdshot loads. Especially with a full choke.

The biggest eye opener is when you try to knock down steel plates at 10-15 yards with #7.5 trap-loads.

You speak the truth on that one. I ran out of shells in a stage last week , trying to put down one stubborn plate. Using a 590 and # 8 challanger shells. I was using a friends gun and I really liked it, but I can't help and wonder what it would cost to get one tapped for chokes. Anybody got an idea on the avg price for that kind of job?

IRG has stated they can get the Modified 590A1 barrels if wanted.

Why would there be 'little difference' when shooting slugs or buck shot with chokes vs CB???

^^This ^^ Even with a longer unchoked barrel this can be difficult.

Here are my choices:

I am pretty happy with the modified on my 14", the results were better than I expected with birdshot, it made a big difference, but I guess it depends on your preference and what you need it for.

You did purchase and use both models (CB & MOD), right? What sort of difference did you notice with different loads (birdshot, intermediate, 00, slugs)?

I did some comparisons at around 20yards. Didn't try slugs but 00 Buckshot wasn't a huge difference, most often the modified bore had tighter groups but not by much and not always. Birdshot was a huge difference though, I was unable to consistently knock down metal A or B zone type IPSC targets with the cylinder bore but they went down easily (and always) with the Modified bore at that distance. That was using #7.5 Birdshot.

i have screw in remington chokes in a 12 inch dlask barrel and it allows you to try different chokes and shot combinations to get effective patterns . you can play around with different loads in cylinder guns and get some interesting results but chokes are the way to go in my opinion.

Use choke tubes in my 12'' 870, and it helps a lot, absolutely worth it! Stay away from any kind of brake, the Dlask barrel I bought came with one similar to the one you posted.
What a piece of bull F%^#. It will tear the #### out of your cases/bags, doesn't do anything to reduce recoil. I was so happy when my set of choke tubes came in, so I could get that pita off ASAP.
My 2 coppers.
