Using the four "C's" in firearm terminology.

Some very famous people - writers and hunters alike, have used the terms shotty, clip and guns among other things without worrying about trivial crap like " oh my ,I'm using the wrong terminology or slang "
Cat

Funny the details we get caught up with at times while ignoring the message itself.

I have a life, thus internet posts or spoken sentences containing misused terminology do not bother me. Clip rather than magazine? Who cares? I know what the speaker means. Etc.

I HATE it when someone doesn't know the difference between a rifle and a gun. A firearm chambered in 7mm R.M. is a RIFLE not a GUN.

A gun is a firearm or weapon that has a metal tube where bullets are fired at a high velocity into a flat ballistic arc while a rifle is a weapon or firearm that has a long barrel that is rifled or grooved giving bullets spinning motion for greater accuracy at a long range.

A gun is designed to be used by a crew or a group of people while a rifle is designed for individual use.

A gun is usually mounted, but it can also be portable to be fired at a distance from the body while a rifle is fired from the shoulder of the user.

Guns are used in tank, artillery, and field combat while rifles are used by sharpshooters and in hunting.

Examples of guns are mortars, cannons, machine guns, tank guns, howitzers, and Gatling guns while examples of rifles are air rifles, automatic rifles like the AK-47 and M16, etc.
Boo,

It's nice that you can google a definition, then copy and paste it. I was going to use "firearm", but I didn't want to get to tech savy.

I'm trolling now; so spank me with a wooden spoon.
But...I'm guessing you are the sort of fellow who gets out of the the shower to have a pee aren't you?
"If there is one thing I can't stand; it's intolerant people! I just want to smash them!"
Maybe a little less starch in the underwear next time...mellow. That's it, breathe, mellllloow...

Not sure what you talking about? where did the intolerant line come from? I am just trying to inform. I would also laugh at someone who thought they would smash me.

It is ironic that one with such poor spelling and grammar, is "teaching" others proper terminology. CGN is an online forum, we communicate with the written word. When you take it upon yourself to point a finger at others, you place yourself squarely in the "spotlight," and are not holding up well under the scrutiny.

Well I just want to get a few things off my chest. There are way too many people using incorrect teminology. It drives me crazy that some misunderstand and/or use the the terms Caliber, Cartridge, Chamber and Chambering interchangeably in reference to the identification of a firearm and/or the round it fires. We tend to accept that people use these terms wrong every minute on this site. Repeated incorrect usage does not make it correct. It may, however, be okay because, almost everyone misuses these terms in the very same way.

"Caliber"- The diameter of a firearms bore or the diameter of the corresponding bullet fired through it.

"Cartridge"- A combination of a bullet, powder, primer, and a specific brass case.

"Chamber" Noun,-refers to the portion of a breech-loading gun or firearm in which the cartridge is contained when said cartridge is in shooting position.

"Chambering" Noun, -hich refers to the cartridge which fits a particular gun. For example, if a gun is intended for use with the 7MM Rem Mag cartridge, its chambering is said to be 7MM Rem Mag.

"Chamber" verb to place a round of ammunition into the chamber.

"Chamber" Verb used as a verb to refer to the act of cutting a chamber into a firearm.

I guess I am just tired of seeing/reading...
"What Caliber is the best for Moose"? "Oh the 270 win Cailber had always put moose in the freezer for me".
" What Caliber is that rilfe you have there? It sure is nice" . "Why Thank-you, it is a 6.5 Swede Caliber, I have used it on everything from Gophers to Moose."

Well if I even help one person by my rant I have accomplished something. My hope is one day we all can get the terminology correct. So we as group can communicate properly and accurately. Please excuse my punctuation, grammer and spelling.
Oh, I can't sleep and it's about -40 or colder outside.

You are not you when you are perturbed by the un-punctuated. Here try a mars bar you are not you when you are hungry for skills. Better? I understand!

All you do is go around saying sarcastic bull... that really never offers anything to this forum half the time. On top of that most of your posts are bragging about good you think you are. I for one can see through your bull.... and would really appreciate it if you see my threads and not share your useless info in them.

I'm with you on that. My concern is the way the law is laid out and/or understood by some. Last year I purchased a box of 10 round 7.62x51 stripper clips while in the U.S. Upon declaring this at the border (coming back into Canada), I was told "Do they come in 5 round clips? Because you're not allowed to have those." And promptly sent me inside. After an hour of waiting, and a 20 minute conversation with the CBSA officer about the difference between a clip and a magazine, I was on my way with my unregulated CLIPS. So yes, I get a little antsy when the whole clip/magazine thing comes up.

I just got "beeatch-slapped" by the boss of the internet! ;)

You can put me on ignore any time you want, but you can't tell anyone where or where not to post...

And again... nice spelling and grammar and syntax from the "teacher."

I agree with noneck180, to utilize the proper terminology of communication in any aspect in life. I don't find fault to educate or give advice in the shooting or hunting world, especially with younger people who are learning the sport. However, individuals who did not pay heed in the educational institutions, good luck on the internet to convert them. Jargon language is another abuse of information, such as: Bee, Roy, Bob. etc......probably just the "cool" factor of saying it. It's most unfortunate that main stream media are the main culprates in jargon. I hope that Hunter Education texts and instructors are using proper English and terminology.
