USMC M40a1 Religious Build *56K DEATH*

Redman, thanks dude. Everyone goes on about the clip slotted receiver...but the really hard part was finding a 6 digit serial numbered receiver withing the same range as the USMC used...I had thought I just found a 6 digit receiver but then Carl told me the range was correct as well...

Cool

But you never said whether it'll be a Unertl or a U.S. Optics. Which is it?

Also, I don't think there's any shame in getting the Mike Rock barrel, which I presume is a custom, match barrel. After all, you do want something competitive with today's precision rifles (0.5 MOA or less)... Who made the originals? I take it that it was just the factory Remington barrels.

Very nice build. I am almost completed my build on the original M40. Did you stamp "U.S." above the serial number on the reciever?

Yes everything is stamped as per spec., maybe when STORM comes over to the projects for Mexican food I will get him to take some proper pics worthy of a Stickman post.My photos suck.

I like the barrel crown....that's a really nice touch. Say.....you mentioned that the Rock barrel was a compromise. Who was the original barrel maker in this serial # range?

EDIT: I pulled this off the internet so it should be 100% accurate....:

"Barrels were originally made by Atkinson Gun Co but they were sold to HS Precision. HS couldn't keep up with demand so the USMC went to Hart barrels. They also use Schneider barrels on the new M40A3. Either are excellent. The M40A1 barrels are 24" long and are about a #7 contour ending at about .900 at the muzzle. Twist rate is 1 in 12."

One of the coolest builds.....EVER!

How long did it take you to search for parts, then put it all together?

Hart, Schneider, Atkinson/H&S Precision, Douglas and Schneider made barrels at one time or another...I suspect had Rock been around with their 5R barrels they would been used as well....the parts collecting didn't take too long and I totally lucked out on the receiver. I never actually saw a single part until I got the complete rifle as they all went straight to Tactical Ordnance. I told Casey there was no rush so he the better part of 8 months to get it done.

Sparrow, very very nice.......please post a range report. Do you have a load in mind?

Range report will be a while, I just cannot bring myself to mount a cheap scope on it just to shoot it. I have waited this long, I figure a while longer won't make any difference. I will work up a load (OCW) with the help of Rooster33 but will try factory Fed GMM as well.

Updated Pics

Well I finally got the scope in. Here are a few pics, the scope is not tightened down, I want to have the rings lapped in before a proper mount. The problem is I cannot find a shop locally that will do it. I may end up buying my own kit and doing it myself. For anyone wanting to do a project like this be warned. you are going to pay a huge premium for outdated and obsolete parts so you had better be a USMC Kool-Aid drinker. For the cash spent you can buy a totally modern weapons system with much better optics which are way easier to set up. But for those of who had to have as close a gun as possible ...this was a labor of love...now if I can just find the correct MRT sling. Scope serial number is same as rifle. This was #80 of 100 from the last batch...

Ray,

You poser:p:D!

She looks great and finally looks the part!

Glad to see that rifle finally all together - took long enough and a long wait for the scope.

I'm kinda proud having dipped my big toe into that build.

That mount should be fine and shouldn't need to be lapped - Casey put it on straight - LOL!

Have at her man.

All the best, Carl

I can make a copy of the Unertl user manual, which is a lot more comprehensive than USO's.

Colonel Rocky Green had the USMC boys at Quantico make up this manual for him when he bought Unertl. Before I sold my Unertl, I made a copy of the manual.

Lots of pictures and a lot easier to follow along with. Makes our CFTO's look like a joke when setting up a C3A1 scope!

Cheers, Carl
