Posted the story about how I came by a UTAS 15 (gen 4) in another thread. Its a good story, i swear.

After getting it, and finding that I REALLY like it (mine works absolutely perfect with 2 3/4 shells, havent tried 3 inch) I also found a few things I wanted that it didnt have.

First up, I wanted an AFG on the pump handle. But, no rail is included and theres almost no space inside to mount one. But I worked hard looking through my parts bin and came up with something. The bolts and backers are from a Magpul rail that comes with the new RVG's to adapt them to a M-Lok rail. The rail itself is from somewhere else, unknown. Fits great and the AFG makes a big difference.

Next, I wanted to mount a flashlight. My first thought was to use an offset rail mount on the top rail... which i tried. But after installing the light there was alot of junk sticking up at the front of the gun and it just looked awkward and silly. So, back to my parts bin. I found another small rail section from something with 2 bolts that thread into a long backer thats as long as the rail. I got looking at it, then at the gun and realized I could use this rail and clamp it through the vent holes on the mag tube covers. Worked perfect and the rail puts the flashlight in the perfect spot.

Next up, I wanted a way to hold some extra shells. No one makes a side saddle for this gun, and a velcro side saddle wont work since theres no where to stick the velcro. Luckily, id bought a FAB rail mounted shell holder a while back for no good reason. It seemed like there would be a way to make this setup work if I could mount another small rail section somewhere appropriate. I had another small section of rail left like the one I used to mount the flashlight. But the lower vent hole area wouldn't work. So I used the upper vent holes but farther back. Rail mounted secure and the spare shell holder clamps on tight and is in a great location for loading. Its also easy to remove for the %99 of the time I don't need or want it on there.

Heres a few pics of the rails on their own.

Finally, I wanted a better optic setup. So I went with a set of folding sights from a Tavor and a Vortex Sparc AR. I like the Sparc AR because its compact and tough, but takes AAA batteries out the front so they are easy to change. Its a nice optic and works great on this gun.

Ive run about 100 rounds through this gun now. All 2 3/4 shells of different styles and loads. It runs perfect. Literally not a single issue at all. Ive read some reviews that say it starts to have trouble when you move up to 3 inch shells. Some have judged the gun to be poor due to this. I feel differently. I only ever intend to run 2 3/4 shells and anything I need to do with it a 2 3/4 will be more than enough. Its no different than a DA Grizzly Mag. They are listed to accept 3 inch shells, but they don't work with the 3 inch very well at all. The SAP 6 is similar. It runs 2 3/4 perfect but develops problems when you move up to 3 inch. Not always, but sometimes.

At first, the UTAS was a novelty. It was a cool looking gun that got alot of attention from... well... everyone. After using it, its become one of my favourite guns period. It feels good, it shoots great, its fun, it looks cool in a very strange way... it shoulders well, cycles really well. I just like everything about it safe for the fit and finish of some parts on my Gen 4. The side panels really don't fit well at all. There is no reason for this. They are not under any kind of stress when the bolts are done up. They just don't fit. The butt pad doesnt fit tight to the receiver. Not a big deal, in fact, not a deal at all. Its just cosmetic but it could be better. There are some sharp edges here and there that could be better but again, non of this effects how the gun works. It just works and, for what this gun cost, $600 taxes and shipping included on the black friday sale... its worth every penny and has exceeded my expectations in almost every way.

Thanks for this post!!!!

Been wracking my brain on how to do a side saddle this has fixed that for me. I did very similar setup right down to the Sparc AR. Only difference was I bought from Nordic a PIG barricade stop with horn and am waiting to install it as a pump assist instead of the rail and afg combo.

Keep posting any updates this is my new favorite truck and ATV gun and for that purpose would love a side saddle. My only other thought was to mount a flat polymer sheet where your saddle is in a similar fashion and 3m Velcro the outside to pull off and on velcro saddle sheets.

Awesome upgrades. I too will be putting on a AFG. Need more details on the rail attachment, could you take a couple pictures and post?
Thanks.

GREAT looking shotty, Pavementsurfer! Is that light a Fenix PD35...? I put one on my Tavor and L-O-V-E it.

I can second everything you said about the UTS 15 ...Cool rig, you've built there,I especially like the front handle ( should try that too ) .
One question arises...Side saddle? For when 15 shells are not enough? Why not on both sides then...that would be a complete box ( 25rds )

Again, thumbs up!

Happy new year

Lol... two side saddles would be alot. I only wanted it on one side so when I sling the gun the side saddle isnt against my back. Its not all worked out yet. But I like that the saddle is removable. Theres no need for it %99 of the time.

thanks for the nice comments guys. Ill get pics of the bottom rail sometime soon and post them up.

Yup, PD35. Love that light. Only problem with it is that its not easy to take off the mount so once its in the Fenix mount its sortof a dedicated gun light. I need another one for an every day use light.

This took longer than it should have. Heres some pics of how I mounted the rails

Lower rail for the AFG
The bolts and backers (nuts) i used were from a Magpul Vertical Fore Grip. The grip comes with a small section of rail that allows it to be mounted to Mlok rails so you can use the grip on an Mlok hand guard. Heres the rail section on its own at Canada Ammo

I only used the bolts and threaded backers. The rail was something I found in my parts bin. Im sure you could buy the longer Magpul rail adapter and use the rail it comes with.

The bolts were too long and stuck up above the backers... so I had to trim them off and file them down once they were mounted.

I finally found where the side rails came from. They are from a Samson AR hand guard.

Im not sure if you can buy them on their own. But they are what I used. The short segments. Here are some shots of the rail from the back side.

I finally upgraded the grip on this gun as well. I really like BCM Mod 1 grips so thats what I went with. Changes the egos of the gun entirely, for the better.

This is my new addition, it worked and I love it. Hogg barricad pad with horn. Supper grippy velcros on and does not shift. Love to see all your innovations guys these are great guns without a lot of aftermarket support. Still trying to find someone who will bring in the UTAS USA barrel hunting plugs but no one will as of yet.

The next time I'm in the US I'm going to buy a few of the hunting plugs and bring them back. If I do, ill list them up on the EE. Was thinking about getting a few of the barrel extensions also. Ill be in the use in february.

I like that barricade you have there Foxer. Nice simple setup thats low profile. Looks great.

Great thead! I just installed a Magpul M-Lok rail & AFG-2 today. Love it!

Where did you pick the BCM Mod 1 grip up from? I want to change mine out, but am unsure which route/grip I want to go with. I see some don't fit right, some have to be dremeled ect.. Yours appears to fit nice and tight without any gaps.

Thanks.

Let me know if you go I'd love both.

I bought one for walking in the bush, but it kinda handles like a pig. Eventually I'd like to countersink some quick detach swivels in the furniture, but for now I added an AR carry handle and front sight post. Looks pretty decent and it's perfectly balanced on the handle for trail arms.

Got Pics?

Here's mine with a Magpul Rail & AFG-2. I had an issue with the left tube only taking 5+1 Rd. Right tube would take 6+1rd. It was deformed causing spring to bind. So this is how I fixed it... A turkey baster lol. Seems good now & loads fine. Gun was brand new as well!!
