Valmet Hunter M76 VS M78

My friend picked up an M78 Valmet in .308 off the EE for a whopping $5000+!!
He let me fire exactly 5 rounds through it before he stowed it away in his vault again lol.
It's a beautiful gun. It is very accurate (especially firing from prone with the bi-pod).
I would assume it is reliable but at $5K + you wouldn't dare put it through the paces to find out how tough it was.
Again the fact that you would pay $5000 + for a rifle because it was an AK action seems a bit insane unless you are swimming in cash.
I would buy a brand new Springfield M1A Match rifle and still have $2000-$3000 left over to chuckle about as I bought 5 years worth of ammo for it lol.
I still got a picture with it out in the woods when I shot it though lol :D

sigh.....it seems really difficult to find a good rifle, if I could I'd take a dsa FAL carbine and be done with it.

For pistols I chose the 3 calibers that made sense to me: colt 1911a1 goldcup stainless (pretty safe bet), glock 22 (FBI and USA police) wanted something in .40s&w and 9mm Beretta Inox (US military sidearm)

For shotgun it was a bit harder but settled on police model remington 870, I was going to buy the mossberg 590a1 (seems generally more reliable and more liked) but last minute went for remington because of steel receiver and got the knoxx stock (seemed to do a great job of reducing recoil and I like pistol grip even though its generally not liked among the shotgun crowd), also the fact that it can be choked although I'd prob only really use it wide open.

Sorry to offend anyone but the M16, C7, AR15 whatever you want to call it just isn't reliable enough for what I'm looking for and I'm qualified to say that based on my own personal experience. I don't have much experience on any other rifle and the grass is always greener. If there isn't anything more reliable than I guess I'll never be happy. Maybe it IS very reliable compared to other rifles I don't know.

If a bear is coming at you and you pull the trigger and the gun doesn't fire then nothing else really matters, the accuracy, weight, etc. The number 1 and 2 most important thing for me is that when I pull the trigger that it ALWAYS shoots (or as close to always as I can get).

My search for the best all around, close to mid range, Canadian legal, reliable and I mean SUPER reliable, 7.62x39 or x51, rifle continues. I may have to go with my first choice of LRB M25 tanker (with scope mount), light weight barrel, in a mccann carbon fiber stock with 1x4 nightforce scope.

I like to have good quality things especially when it comes to a rifle and I can't shoot more than 1 rifle at a time so I'd just like 1 really good one. I'm not interested in anything low cost because you generally get what you pay for. I'll end up getting other good quality rifles later anyway.

All that being said I am still relatively interested in the RFB its a neat concept (but unsure of reliability, it seems kel tech has a bad name I watched a video of them testing a pistol and the RFB, the RFB did well but the pistol was such a lemon). I am also still interested in the overpriced M78. If I have to spend 5k to get the best rifle then that's fine with me. It seems more accurate than the AK47 and should also be very reliable since it is the AK action, probably a bit less reliable because of tighter tolerances (IE more accuracy). The XCR seems much too unreliable for me (based on research), even though its AK style action I guess its just not ready yet or they didn't do as good a job as they could have.

I am on this forum because I don't know everything and I don't pretend to know everything or really anything. I am looking for help from you guys who know a lot more about this than I do. I thank everyone for their help!

Oh I thought the M76 was also unrestricted. So the M78 is the only unrestricted AK action. I would like to buy this rifle to actually fire it and it'll prob be that much harder to find one that hasn't just been sitting in a safe for its whole life.

That RA XCR in 7.62 looks fantastic with the folding stock, 10 round mags and large rail. Do you know what type of action it uses. I'd like something very reliable (IE not an AR15). Any idea of how reliable the XCR is? Also what is the approximate price of this rifle and where can I buy them? Can they be ordered directly or do they need to be imported?

Thanks guys this has been a big help. I was thinking about getting an M14 but for some reason I've kinda lost interest.

Are you seriously suggesting that Ar15's aren't reliable?

If you want something that's really reliable, accurate and non-restricted, a Swiss Arms would be a good choice. If you're fine with a Restricted firearm, there are lots of well built, reliable AR's out there (Colt, H&K, KAC, BCM, Noveske, LMT, etc.), many of those manufacturers also make variants in .308.

And what exactly would your personal experience be?

Not as of yet because AFAIK the SAPR is still unavailable. There is also the prospect of Tactical Imports bringing in FAMAE manufactured SG 542 rifles, but both of these are currently unavailable and the time frame for when/if they will become available is undetermined. Any specific reason why you're set on .308?

haha its ok, its a pretty small round we only get 5 rounds (or 10 with pistol mags) in Canada anyway so they might as well count. Out of curiosity what is the most reliable ar15? What about most reliable ar15 in 7.62 x51 or x39?

The LMT MWS has received very positive feed back, and is in service with the Brits in Afghanistan. Another option is the KAC SR25. Both are well built top tier AR's.
