I think perhaps you did yourself a disservice in letting that rifle go for a loss. It seems to go completely against any trends I've observed in milsurp collecting, at least over the last 5 years. Maybe you're just too kind spirited for your own good? If the gent sold it for a hefty profit just six months after acquiring it from you - that should be an indicator that perhaps you were a little too reasonable on the price.

The EE can be a fickle place but more often than not, I've personally had pretty good experiences when selling items here on CGN. I think the key to getting fair market value for a K98 online is to take lots of crisp close ups of the matching serial numbers. It's one thing to say it's all matching, but when you show someone 20 pics of the same number it becomes a little more impressive which (at least in my opinion) prompts people to pull their wallets out a little more easily. Just my experience though.

I have one, all numbers matching, that appears un-issued with matching unsharpened bayonet and scaboard and a sling that the leather is completely new and so I'm thinking the sling is a copy?
I'll be keeping it as I see it as waterfront property. The just aren't making it anymore.

I'd be interested in buying the Original Sling that was with the rifle when you had it. If you want to sell it to me one day It would make me a happy guy since it was coming on the rifle originally.

It wasn't its original sling. I added it. But to be totally honest, I sold my other port. I may live to regret it as it was mint and unfired with matching bayonet, but something else called my name........k43
 
I might be in the minority, but I don't really see the value. If I'm going to pay top dollar for a k98 I want some WWII history. A german made, german used piece is ideal, or even an RC, but a Portugese contract mauser would have to be in its pristine import condition with its matching bayonet for me to fork out even 1000$
 
Yes...This will be Earth Shattering news to you... the Ports were made in Germany around 1941 at Mauser in Oberndorf, Germany and some RC K98's were Port k98's. Imagine That.

It's still basically a time capsule looking into Mauser production and the quality they could provide during wartime. I personally only really like the mint all matching ports. But also prefer combat used German coded rifles.

Nice one on the ee. $2200 mint but mm bayonet. So the mint base rifle is likely worth $2000 of that.
We will have to watch it.
 
Interesting thread. I bought one over the phone, matching, that a fellow told me was a "WW2 German rifle, with a nice crest on the receiver. A dealer told me it was mint." The dealer wouldn't give him $600 for it. Hmm. Being rather slow on the draw, it took a while to realize that German rifles didn't usually have a "crest" on the receiver. While he was busy sending me pics, it dawned on me. It was, indeed, a German-made rifle, and did have a crest. It wasn't mint, but is matching and in very nice condition.. It is marked with German proof marks, so I presume it is one Hitler kept for his own use. There is a sling on it, but I have no idea if it is original or not.

I won't be making a lampstand out of this one just yet. If it was issued, it was likely never used in actual battle conditions. I know that it would bring a pretty penny if it was put on the market. Don't anyone get excited, as I am going to hog it for myself. I do show these rifles to people who are interested.

Edit: I think it only reasonable to say that I think 1941 Portugese Mausers are very interesting rifles, whether they made it to Portugal or not. So are a lot of other rifles that people like to poo-poo. As to the $$ value, I think the value is actually determined when the rifle changes hands. With the odd exception of an extremely rare rifle of which the value can possibly be set approximately, most rifles are valued at what the market bears, and they pretty much need to be sold to gather that kind of hard data.
