how would you guys say varget meters thru the lee powder thrower?

I often see people mention X meters bad or along those lines, an then I had a bit of a experience recently, but thought id ask,

just the basic lee thrower, an varget powder .. how have you found it?

I'm using the lee autodrum and it measures varget fairly consistently. I usually load 24gr for a .223 with 55gr projectile. The powder measure throw varies between 24 to 24.2. I don't load max.

If it is close to max value, I would be using a dipper + trickler.

My Lee powder thrower is usually +/- 0.1 gr on about 40% of the charges thrown. For hunting loads, this may not be an issue, but almost all my shooting is on paper, so I've always thrown it on a scale and trickled up to final charge weight.

Lee perfect powder measure (the cheap one) is one of their good products. With ball powder it's extremely consistent, with extruded it's as consistent as any other thrower.
I weigh all my charges and use a small Lee pistol dipper to top up. Usually set it bang on for ball and if I get one throw out of whack just dump it back in the hopper. Extruded I set .2 grains light and top up when needed with the dipper. Goes pretty fast once you get rolling.

Agree with the comments above. Stick powders like Varget and H4895 meters well. It doesn't get that "snag" like on the RCBS powder measure. It does not do well with fine powders like H110 as it leaks all over and if you tighten up the cylinder, it's too stiff/buggered down to operate.

I'd take the Lee Perfect Powder Measure over most (if not all) of the expensive electronic weight-based and volumetric throwers. I pounded out 1,500 rounds of .223 with Varget last month, used the PPM and found remarkable consistency in the loads. My fancy and expensive electronic thrower is a pain in the ass with Varget.

Hey Whelan,

I use Varget in the Lee Perfect Powder measure. (also W760, IMR4166 Re15, and soon to try IMR4064) At first the repeatability was s$%t with Varget. But over time it got better from some tips and suggestions shared here that I'm thankful for because I was going to throw the damn thing away.

- thrower needs to be broken in. A couple of pounds of stick powders recommended. Mine settled out after 4 lbs of stick powders. Before that I was ready to throw the thing out.
- anti-static ~ dryer fabric softner sheets rubbed on the inside of the hopper and lid. Perhaps a little voodoo but I noticed the kernels sticking to the hopper and thought it plausible that static would have an effect. At the time I was willing to try anything so it's just part of the routine. One fellow even taped a used softner sheet to the outside of the hopper.
- some guys have a tapping method at some point during the cycle of throwing a charge. Either tapping the hopper, or tapping the throwing arm to what ever AC/DC beat to have the powder settle in. I've incorporated that but have no objective evidence to positively say that this makes a difference.

FWIW

Regards
Ron

I have both the Lee perfect powder measure and the autodisk powder measure both measures work quite well with Varget. The finer the kernel size the better they seem to perform. Accuracy is good as most have noted. These measures seem to not work as well with longer stick powders they will sometimes stick or hang up a bit and may chop a grain from time to time. But they do work quite well.

Hey! Gday there!
I totally forgot about this and just jumped on to touch base regarding the 120 gr sierra loads in the 708, anyhow! I appreciate the response here !

Thanks heaps! pretty similar to what I found, the odd charge doesn't weigh up but throw it back in and go again

cheers from a Cooler than normal few days in February in Australia, snow fell last night at 1400m.... last week it was 40 deg celc an Thursday is also back to 40.. ha ha
