Varmint gun choices?????

I was in a simular situation last fall.... I was offered an oppertunity to go to Montana to shoot p-dogs......

As it happens I didn't go. But I did manage to settle on a .223. I opted for a Remington Model 700 SPS Tactical. I got mine at Frontier Firearms

After a bit of time bedding the action and weighing down the barrel channel, playing with loads ( I do reload ) and just some general fine tunning I have managed groups under 1" at 200y if the wind co-operates. With AE 55gr FMJ I have only been able to manage 2.16" groups when the wind co-operates.

I have seen quite a few of these SPS Tac.'s for sale in the EE, I'm not quite sure why as mine is a very accurate rifle.....

As a second choice I would go with a savage rifle.Bear in mind that any of the entry level savages will also require bedding and a bit of accurizing to function really well.

I have looked into these a bit, but have heard/read vastly varying opinions. These were what I was thinking of getting when I first thought about getting into a varmingt gun.
H&R Ultra Varmint Fluted to be precise.


OK, so in your guys opinion would I be better off with $400 or a H&R Utra Varmint fluted allowing a little more money in the optics funds or $600 for the TC encore?????:confused::confused:

my idea of a varmint gun 6-7 years ago vastly differed from my idea of a varmint gun now. im sick of lugging around ~14lb rifles like my 700P.

lightweight, compact, great action, fluted medium contour 22" barrel.

The M-7 platform is a great choice for a walking varmint rifle. My .243 is easy to carry and has a fluted 22" medium varmint contour Lilja barrel in a B&C stock.

I would recommend a Savage 11F. (in .223 of course)
I don't own that particular model but I do own a 111GL, and it will put 3 shots at 100 yards into 1 oval hole.
The 111 is just a hunting rifle and I am truly amazed at the accuracy of this thing.
If the 11F is anywhere close it would be very hard to beat for what you are looking for.
