Varmint Long Shots...what's your best?

Fifty yard shot at a crow about 50 feet up a tree with a 20 cal Benjamin pistol pellet gun.
Droped almost dead,... The whinning got every crow in the neighbourhood over so i reloaded.... The Wirehaired took care of it, but when they saw the gun, they decided to leave.:D

I had a Savage in .204 Ruger that I regularly used on gophers out to 350 yards. When I put a Shilen barrel in it I was grouping 3" at 500 yards but had to sell if for $$$ when economy took a dump last year. Very sad because I wanted to make a 500 yard kill on a gopher:(

That being said the kill I am most proud of was a 200 yard (+ or - 10 yards) shot on a very shy gopher who only showed his head once every few minutes or so.

I spotted him and waited with the crosshairs on his burrow till he popped up for a second to long and I let him have it.

If you look closely you can see that the bullet spit his head so exactly that one incisor is to the left and one to the right. It is my proudest shot, (even thought it may only be a 200 yard) but even an experienced benchrest pro would be hard pressed to divide a skull so perfectly.

Well, if I remember right, the fixed 10 power 3200's turrets are 10 moa, 3.25 - 3.5 turns so about 35 minutes. That was for 271 meters, so right about 300 yards.

Again, if memory serves...

I shot 3 gophers in a row with a 220 Swift at a smidge under 400m based on the truck odometer.:D I know, not that big of a deal.

The same day I missed a gopher at ~ 300m 10 times with a 250 Ackley.

Got him on the 11th shot though.;)

Coyotee first shot went over him, he stopped to look at the impact site. Second shot texas heart shot, bullet didn't come out. Browning Bar Safari 270 cal 130gr Nosler ballistic tip, 541 yards.
Alberta gopher 402 yards, Savage 223 LRPV. 69gn nosler CC

You need to watch the mythbusters episode about shooting a bullet straight in the air. :nest:

i've seen it, twice. the point is there's no need for anyone to be on here bickering about a story someone shared. it's not like he was here telling people to go start firing rifles into the air and that it's a great idea. it was something that happened a long time ago and he decided to share it with us.

you safety nazi's need to loosen up your panties a wee bit;)

My best shot was a crow in a tree, about 200 meters, with a Ruger 9622 Magnum and open sights. I still have a hard time believing I actually hit that poor crow. When I went over to him, I had taken his head clean off.

Bull$h1t luck!

145 paces - headshot on a gopher - with an antique Colt 1860 army .44 cap and ball revolver. I held over by 3-4 ft, and cartwheeled him.... the ball didn't even break the skin, just caved in his head a bit and bounced off.

Yes it was 100% legal, yes it was pure dumb luck, and yes i had a withness.

I've shot lots of varmints at much longer range but that's the one i most wish i had on video.

Ground squirrel at 297yards with a 17hmr, where my duplex cross hairs get fat is set for 250 yards, so I just held that point roughly 1 gopher high and let fly..

But the most memorable was a month ago. Hit a coyote at 187 yards in the onside shoulder, quartering towards, with a 300gr Berger from my 338 edge. Imagine a gopher with a 22-250, just much larger... Houston we have lift off!!

Best shot, Standing coyote @ 586 yrds with my Rem 700 VLS in 204 ruger. Or at least thats what the Lieca range finder told me. All i know is it was a far friggin shot. I didnt even think i hit him until i got close.

lots of running yotes over 200 yds. Not as many as I've missed though.
This last summer we were making ridiculous off hand 200 yard shots on gophers with the 22's. Shot a bumble bee with my red rider once. In 2009 I shot a running coyote at a little over a hundred yards right in the tailpipe with the muzzleloader.

Long shot on Caribou

Living up in the NWT, I took a barrren ground caribou at 458 paces, out in the wind, on an open lake with a HB 22 250. Going for a head shot, the 8th shot planted behind his ear knocked him down like a lightening strike.

(Yes, this was a legal caliber)

A second thought was a coyote last year at 630 with an 250 grain Lapua Scenar.
