Velcro side saddle

My experience with the Velcro ones has been trash. They either fall off the gun entirely under recoil, or don’t retain the shells adequately.
From experience, I’d highly recommend avoiding them altogether.

Or if you want options go the MT route. :)

I think this is where it will pay to buy professional quality items. I did and have never had that problem. The hard shell holders are fine if you want one on the gun at all times but OTOH the Velcro models will allow you to slap on a fresh one from a pouch on your belt in really exciting times. I also had an 870 Express where tightening the bolts for a hard shell holder a little too much would cause the gun to jam. Had.

I found the mesa to be the worst of the bunch, and don’t store shells in it for any length of time. I went back to belt mounted like the California comp

What would you consider to be “professional quality” in regards to Velcro side saddles?
The one in question for me is from S&J hardware.

I actually picked up a Mesa Tac for my 590 to replace the Velcro last fall on clearance, as I had one many years ago on a Super Nova which did its job amazingly however I’ve found that the retention rods that I received don’t work for ##### all either.

Luckily, I never have an honest use for a shotgun so it’s not going to effect my daily in any measurable way.

It's been a while for me now but I believe mine came from both High Speed Gear and Blue Force Gear, and for renewing Velcro patches on the guns when they had to come off I use the actual brand name, self adhesive, 2' wide Velcro industrial strength as sold at Home Depot. That said, I knew an SOF type who claimed he used dollar store hook & loop material.

I have a DSC from S&J on my 590. Works great!!

Make sure you use an alcohol pad to prep your receiver and let it dry COMPLETELY before sticking the pad to it. Compress firmly for a minute or two, then LET IT SET UP OVERNIGHT! If you start tugging on it right away the adhesive will rip off... I let my second one (they shipped with extras!) set up overnight and it has been ROCK SOLID through a year of matches and range trips.

The best of all options rolled in one product: Aridus Industries Quick-Detach Carrier. Detachable carrier with no velcro and a metal leaf spring-ish shell retention system that seems to hold up really well. The only downside is that there is a very slight weight penalty for having all aluminum components rather than plastic or fabric. But honestly, it's only a few grams difference when all is said and done.
