Would you buy a tactical version from the get go? Or buy a base modle for 900$ and it marked for 3 1/2" shells and cut the barrel and get a extention?

I'm gonna go with the 26" version add a mag extension, clamp, extended bolt handle and follower and call it a day. If the tactical was marked 3 1/2" I'd probably go with that one but having marked it as a 3" chamber you'll be stuck with less capacity.

Agree with JohnnyMac. Plus I've been keeping tabs on the other thread re: the VMT and looks like you would have to do some modifications on the tube it comes with to load 6 x 2 3/4 shells.

There are dimples in the stock mag tube for the plastic retainer insert... thingy... Nordic Components makes their Versa Max extension tubes, but aren't in stock yet.. you'll have to apply for an IIC permit to import them from the states. I like the sportsman model, as it's chambered and marked for 3.5" shells.... huge bonus, means I can get a +5 extension tube, and still be legal.

I'm on the fence if I want to cut down the barrel to 26", I loose the benefits of having a choke. However, the tactical model, has all the upgrades I'm looking for, enlarged bolt release, extended charging handle, and looks like it has a closed/welded shell lifter, and fiber front sights.

I just bought a VMT, the factory plug holds 5+1 3 1/2 shells and I can get 7+1 2 3/4 shells in it. I'd say that it's worth it over a standard models and yes it fires 3 1/2 just fine. I found a video of an interview with a Remington rep at shot show and be claimed that the only reason it was not marked 3 1/2 was because during testing one of their hypervelocity turkey loads wouldn't reliably feed. They had issues with the shell pulling apart or something, but only for that shell. I do not recall the exact shell he mentioned.
The only complaint I have is that the hand guard rattles, but I think if I adjust the extension tube nut I can fix that.

isn't that illegal though?

even if the shotgun has the capability to take 3.5" shells, but the manufacturer states it's a 3" shell shotgun? i think you would be limited to just 6 x 2 3/4" shells, not 7.

I called the Canadian Firearms Centre a few months ago and they told me the Versa Max Tactical is considered to legally hold a maximum of five 3.5 inch shells in its magazine. They don't care what is stamped on the barrel. Their technicians look at the action and the chamber. But don't take my word for granted. E-mail them yourself and ask if it is legal to put 5 3.5 inch shells in the Versa Max Tactical's magazine. Then you'll have a printout for a skeptical cop.

If 5 3.5 inch shells are legal, then 5.9 3.5 inch shells are legal as well.

Interesting, I'm wondering if that could apply to other semi-auto shotguns as well? I'll email them. Would love to have an extra round.

The CFC told me quite clearly that the 5 shells limit for any semi shotgun refers to the largest shell that fits in the chamber. If more than 5 of a smaller shell fit in the mag, you are still legal. Keep in mind that hunting regulations in Ontario still require you to temporarily plug your mag to only accept 2 shells of the size you are actually using for the hunt.

That is the way the gun came. I have not modified it in any way, shape, or form. I figured if it was illegal then I would not have been able to purchase it.

That is the same here in AB. I will have to limit the mag if I want to use it this fall for hunting

May I ask where you bought your Versa Max Tactical? I'm very interested in this gun but I live in Calgary. The only place I've seen it here is at The Shooting Edge, but the only one they have listed on their website is the weird zombie green colour, and they're selling it for $1500. If i'm not mistaken the regular black one can be had for $1200. I much prefer that colour and I much prefer that price.

I'm also considering either a plane versamax cut to 22" with a tube extension etc for 3 gun or a VMT. I would like to see the cfc's ruling before I decide which way to go. Anybody know who has either instock? I know milarm had a base model versamax but that's the only one i've found.
