I have been reading all kinds of posts here, but I am having trouble determining how many 2 3/4" rounds a Versa Max tactical will hold straight out of the box. Has anyone that owns one crammed it full of 2 3/4" ammo and counted? If so, would you be willing to share the answer?

The tube will only hold six 2 3/4" shells. Thats because its for 3" shells (five 3" will fit). If it was for 3 1/2" shells you'd be able to fit seven 2 3/4" into the tube (like a stoeger M3500).
It's a semi auto, so it's limited to 5 rounds. But, because its designed for 5 rounds of 3" the tube will fit 6 rounds of 2 3/4" and still be legal.
The only way to legally hold eight shells in a versa max tactical is 6 in the tube, one on the lifter and one in the chamber.

What? It definitely will NOT hold eight from the factory. Or in any configuration, really. I've heard of guys managing to cram 8x 2.75" shells in a tube and still manage to not get the 6th 3.5" in there, but it wouldn't work out that way with the shells I'm using. Maybe if you found the longest possible 3.5"/shortest 2.75" shells it miiight work. But you're walking a fine line at that point.
The VM tactical in Canada comes with the mag tube extension blocked at 5x 3" shells I think, as the gun is stamped as a 3" gun. Works out to 6x 2.75". (Though there's a letter from the RCMP confirming that it is in fact a 3.5" chamber receiver, and that running 5x 3.5" shells is fine. Which would get you the 7th 2.75". Can't remember who got it. DILLIGAF maybe?)

That would be interesting to see, My barrel says 2 3/4" or 3" so I wonder if i'd need to change the barrel to read 3 1/2" to avoid any hassle. Would love to know if I could some how get that 7th 2 3/4" shell in there legally.

Remington put out a letter saying the tactical is a 3.5" receiver and is not marked for 3.5" only due to warranty/feeding issues.
I agree that building it for some obscure combination of long 3.5" and short 2.75" would be way too fine of a line to walk. Loading it up with 9 total already can get attention.

Look at this guy! That's the one. Not sure why I thought it was from the RCMP (?), but that's definitely the sheet I was talking about. If you're comfortable with it, print that m0therfu¢ker out, put a different mag tube extension on your tactical, and shove 7 in that thing.
I think the tactical uses the Nordic (?) extension (With the separate nut and extension tube), IIRC. From what I saw with my buddy's, they limit the Canadian models with an actual machined ring in the extension tube. If you were to throw it in a lathe and bore it out, it looked like the wall thickness would be so thin that I'd be worried about it breaking in half (Or might even have looked like the two would interfere, meaning boring the ID straight would separate the two halves). You can get a new extension tube from Nordic and replace the one that came on it, but they're fairly pricey for one extra round of capacity. Depends on how valuable it is to you.
I really like being able to fit 7 in the tube though; it allows for a more reasonable quad load procedure from empty- Drop the bolt, load 4. Hit the shell release, rack one into the chamber, load 4 more. With only 6 capacity you would have to do a quad and a double. Which sucks. It gets even easier if MOA precision/J Kenny & co. get an auto load lifter for the Versa Max done. Load the mag on an open bolt, and it automatically chambers one (Some Brownings come factory with this feature). *Drool*

Does TacOrd make their own mag tubes specifically to hold 5.9 rounds of 3.5" (to get the max capacity of 2.75") or do they use someone else's extension and just permanently block it? I'm just curious.
It's really not. The RCMP have clarified that magazine capacity on auto shotguns is dictated by the largest shell it can chamber. It might get attention, but it's 100% legal. It's in less of a weird grey area than AR pistol mags, and way less than the 10 round Turkish pump action mags. (Not that either of those are outside of the written law
)

We make our own mags for the Versa max to maximum legal capacity which we put on our Tacord Versa max Pro model.
As well, we are a dealer for Nordic Components and stock magazine extensions in all lengths for most makes of shotguns as well as other accessories.
