VERY Disapointed with a few hunters.

I have been hunting moose and deer in Ontario for 30 years now, and have enjoyed many good times and had chance to meet some very fine people.

But this moose season made me look differently at some.

On the opening day our group heard a barrage of gun fire 11 or 12 shots
very close together followed by 3 single shots. We figured this was a group test fireing there guns.

2 days later we discovered what they were shooting at. We found 2 gut piles
that we figured were a cow and large bull, then we found a 2 year old bull
dead and bloated with no attempt to salvage this animal. This animal had
at least 4 shots in the body and one in the head.

The only thing we could figure was they drove up on what appeared to be a bull cow and calf and shot all 3 only to discover they had 2 bulls.

As there were many other hunters in the area that would have loved to claim this animal but none were contacted. So this majestic animal was killed for nothing.

I still think the vast majority of hunters are very ethical/responsible but it only takes a few to spoil thing for the rest.

Thats my 2 cents :mad::mad:

I hope you have reported this to the MNR ,They can investigate all applicants who recieved a Bull tag for the wmu . Usually someone spills the beans.plus they can collect any bullets from the animal as evidence.

I came upon three animals bed down early one morning. When I came upon them a cow came up and i fired she went down and another cow and bull came up. I thought it was the same cow and fired again. When the smoke cleared and the adrenaline rush calmed I had discovered I had two cows down. I made a few phone calls and discovered a buddy of mines dad had an either ### tag for the area. He was more than happy to accept the cow. I am way more careful these days, and would never let a misfortune go to waste.

If someone makes a mistake, I guess the right thing to do is turn yourself and your friends in, lose your truck, guns and hunting priveledges for 5 years. Have your name published in the paper so that your whole family can share your shame. It's the right thing to do rather than letting the animal get eaten by no good vultures, crows ravens, bears, wolves, foxes, porcupines and even mice. That's what happens when you go to the MNR with your hat in hand. I guess that's the right thing to do. If you get caught looking for someone with a tag, you get charged. If you know someone who has a tag and they're not hunting with you and they come out and tag it, you both get charged and if you try and sneak the animal home, then you're a no good poacher. I've found animals dead in the bush before and it's a damn shameful waste. If someone phoned me up and asked me to attach my bull tag that I waited 14 years to get, on a moose that he accidentally shot, I'd tell him to piss up a rope. Bottom line is these guys screwed up, they took the animals they could legally take home and will probably feel terrible for a long time over the whole ordeal. Some of them may never hunt again over it. Yes it sucks but it was a moose and not a person. Life goes on.

I spoke to an old friend and he related a story like Sloshark said too. Went in to DNR with an accidentally harvested doe and came out with a fine.

They also never told him he couldn't go hunting the next day, he went out and met DNR and got another fine. All for being an honest hunter. He'll never speak to them again and I can't blame him.

I know of a guy who poked a bull and watched it run into a small patch of pines. Other members went in to push it a bull ran out and he shot it. Turns out it was a different bull and his was dead in the pines. They found a party to take it but sometimes #### happens. Maybe it was a band of natives its their heritage to poach year round with rifles. Untill the ppl that fired are found we won't know the truth. A moose may have died but it won't be wasted. Everything must eat

I guess we just call a barrage of 11-12 + 3 shots by a firing squad of poachers a "mistake" and walk away. I guess we hold the poachers' hands for a while so they don't feel bad. I guess we just tell them it is either MNR's fault or morons who consider themselves responsible hunters.

I guess somebody has to deliver these words of wisdom to my hunting area's locals, who have no respect for hunters anymore, because they keep coming across scenes like this all the time.
