Video Games and Guns

Ridiculous thread.

I bought a Desert Eagle because of the movie Snatch. Also, I believe my Beretta 92 purchase was due to some movie or another.

I always wanted a .45 when i was a kid. I hated .40 and pretty much anything else. 9mm and .45 were the calibres to have. My first handgun was .45 Hi-Point. 9mm's weren't available and there was no way i was getting a .40. You only live once. I can understand why this kid HAD to have a .45, because I did.

Personally I am pretty convinced that video games are what's going to save private gun ownership.

If it weren't for video games, I think a lot of kids would only think of gun ownership in terms of fat angry weirdos in realtree camo hanging around sketchy 1970s looking gun ranges in beater pickups with Browning buck stickers in the window.

Partly on account of video games, I think lots of kids grow up thinking, "ARs and HK45s...f'ing badass and I want them." There is way more detailed information about guns in video games than any other source. It's not just "gun shaped things" the way it often is in movies. It's "Vickers 1911" or "M1 Garand" or "Beryl 96" displayed on the screen. It gives the kids an appetite for specific guns and makes gun culture seem cool.

I completely agree. I admit that video games and action movies have been a large factor in myself becoming a gun owner and sparked my interest in it. Granted an interest I have had since the days of my grandpa letting me play with an old break barrel 10 gauge he had in the basement while he tinkered at his desk.

I work in IT and have been shooting for a long time. Our new guys are always interested to hear about real guns, and more often then not its from a video game of some sort. If it gets more people licensed and shooting then I'm all for it.

Personally, I've learned a lot about guns from video games. A lot of games have very detailed information and even customization options. They can be great sources of information. But for some reason, when guns and video games are mentioned in the same sentence, it worries people. How many .44 mags and M-14s and Mosin Nagants have been sold because people saw them in a movie? Same difference. Except you'd probably know more about the gun if you used it in a game.

I always liked westerns and now 2/3 of my guns are lever-action...............I now feel an urge to get boots with spurs.

was watching tv with my 13 yr old and a couple of his buddies. all play mw3...the new black ops commercial comes on with R Downey Jr that ends with that FPSrussia guy. they all knew exactly who he was. knew he was the gaming tips youtube guy and a fake russian...and could name most of the guns he features by name...their faves from mw3.

I don't remember knowing anything about guns when I was that age...but do remember the old plastic SWAT guns we had (from the tv show lol) ...but had no idea it was an M16. when I took my rPal last year - at 48 I was by far the oldest in the class.

kids are a lot smarter than we give em credit for these days...and i think these video games will translate into positive growth for our sport in the future

I bought a USP partly because it was in a lot of video games. That pistol did not disappoint and paved the road for IPSC, IDPA and a whole lot of shooting fun over the last 8 years.

Its the fact that these video game users shoot other players in a first person game, and it starts to overwhelm their lives completely. Maybe if he was playing a deer hunting game and bought the gun used it would be different, but seeing someone boast their "kill death ratio" and then go buy the pistol they used to electronically slaughter people does leave me fairly weary. I agree with the original poster.
