The throttles had an emergency position. If you moved the throttle past a gate, you got max boost, plus those tip tanks jettisoned. Handy on a take off gone bad.

The radar was a big heavy ground-based unit.

I think they're referencing Sepp Allerberger's book. I whipped through it last month. Pretty gruesome, and a bit "man's adventure-ish", but worth reading.
