The gendarmes were toting SMLE's and MkIII STEN's.

You can clearly see the Gendarmes are ready to swing their STEN's like Louisville Sluggers.

My dad carried one in the Belgian Navy shore patrol. This is what the STENS in Belgian Navy service were used as - a more horrible form of spontoon. They were not commonly issued ammo for them.

I think the SMLE's and STEN's were gifted by the UK, but I don't know for sure. early Cold War military aid.

One gets the impression the republicans were considered: 'foreign interference.'
