Visiting the battlefields of the Great War *PIC HEAVY*

Thank you so much for posting this. Every Canadian must if possible make the journey to Vimy, Dieppe and Juno Beach. Not to mention several other battlefields too where Canadians made the sacrfices that helped define our country.

I agree. I think field trips in middle school, perhaps high school, should be funded by the government so that students can see these places first hand instead of reading about them only in books. A new understanding and appreciation is gained by actually being on the sites where such famous and infamous battles took place.

Beautiful essay... So much interesting facts and history during that period, imposible to imagine such times. Ingenuity used above and below Vimy is beyond me.....
Side note, Adanac Cemetery=Canada spelt backwards just thought I'd point that out..

Thanks, brings back memories, and tears. My grandfather fought in that war and won a medal of bravery (took out a German machine gun single handed). I was there when I was 15, some 42 years ago. It was gut wrenching then, so is seeing it again in your pics. War is such a waste, but so often thrusted upon us. Thanks again.

Yes, we should not forget how effective Canadians were in Italy. My friend's father was in that theater. He said that instead of going down the streets of towns, where the Germans were hiding in homes, they would blast their way through the walls and drop the buildings from under the Germans.

Great post, visited many of the same sites you did in 2005 with three good friends. Heart wrenching to see the age of so many of the fallen.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting!

I was at Vimy, Thiepval and Ypres back in 09. I'll hopefully be heading back later this year to give a tour of Dieppe to my host regiment after our trip to the Somme.
