Visiting the battlefields of the Great War *PIC HEAVY*

Thank you so much for your time and effort. I'm glad you took the time to share your trip with the rest of us. As a Newfoundlander I loved to see the Bronze Caribou. Beamount Hamel still has a big sense of pride here and your photos show it so well. I hope to get there myself some day. Thanks again.

I am already in the process of planning my second trip. I will go back to some familiar sites (Ypres, Beaumont Hamel...etc) and venture off into some new ones in Belgium and France.

Being on those sites was more than just awe inspiring, it did change me for the better.

i was born and raised in switzerland, am now a canadian, and seeing these pics brought back memories of sites i have seen, stories i've heard from family and friends. and it all brings tears to ones eyes. let us never forget what remembrance day is truly about.
a salute to all the soldiers regardles of which country they served. they all fought for their rights and freedom. may they all reast in peace, and to the few survivng vets: thank you.

To my great grandfather, his comrades, to his opposing foes, to the airmen who flew high over the trenches in their own battlefield, to the seaman patrolling the open blue sea, to those who served but are hardly mentioned, and to those still on patrol in their respective branches...we remember them this day, forever and always.

Lest we forget...

Thanks a bunch for the pictures and the descriptions. I would love to visit some of these places in the future. Seeming these pictures put realism to the stories that you hear.

If you liked the pictures you have to go! It's pretty surreal seeing the old battlefields and cemeteries. I'll always remember the tour. It's worth every penny.

What an awesome thread, great job. Such dedication and attention to detail.

I did a similar trip to Normandy and Ypres in 2006. I'll never ever forget those few days I spent in honour of those who died yesterday for my very existence today

Thanks for the pictures, they are great. This is the same type of pilgrimage that many schools in the UK send their students on. I wish schools here would spend a little more time on the true Canadian heroes of our military, past & present.

Museums in France

Great Images. Of cse easy for us in UK and me in Belgium easy to see all the WWI history. There are Canadian students who stand guard at the Newfoundland Memorial so geography permitting I think the Canadian schools would do more if they could. Some great museums too and here are some MG related 'snaps' from Albert and Peronne.

Beautiful pictures, MG1918. Those items looked like they were taken straight from the battlefield in 1918. Is it required for them to be deactivated in Belgium ?

Excellent pictures. I was there myself in 2007 and was amazed by the size of the Vimy Memorial. I couldn't believe that i was still able to pick up shrapnel of the battle fields after all these years.
