Visiting the battlefields of the Great War *PIC HEAVY*

Thank you for this, it is very well done. I've walked a lot of these grounds during battlefield study tours set up by 4 CMBG, and would like to have had this as a guide then. One still has the sense that it would be a very bad idea to step off the path, although people do.
 
Amazing photos!! Thanks so much for posting this, almost felt like I was right there with you. Love how all the battlefields seem to be more or less left as is and you can still see all the craters and what not.
 
These are great photos. Norm Christie did the same sort of thing in his series "For King and Empire", but he says that very few people actually visit the Canadian cemeteries and monuments in Europe. That's a shame.

It's gotta be an expensive trip, though. The OP points out how remote many of these locations are. It's very helpful to have nearly a POV of these sites. It really has an intense impact. Thanks for posting these. It keeps us remembering.
 
Thanks for posting... my grandfather (a ww2 vet) always wanted to visit Beaumont Hamel but he could not afford to and now is not in a condition to fly. Being a proud Newfoundlander, ex-military, having lost good friends in action and having been very involved in Remembrance, I want to visit Beaumont Hamel as well. These pictures may have only satisfied my wishes temporarily, however to get a mere glimpse of the land over there was amazing. Like another fellow, I found myself a little teary-eyed through some of the photographs. I want to thank you for posting this and to the moderators for making this a sticky topic. Everyone should know and respect the past. Thank you.
 
Thanks Nabs for the post and awesome pics . My Grandfather was at Beaumont-Hamel and survived the carnage to answer role call next day . One of 68 out of 800 plus . My Great uncle still lies out there on the battlefield . My Grandfather went back in 1961 with Joey Smallwood to rededicate the monument there . He remembered the events of July 1st , 1916 as if had just happened the day before . Said in his journal Joey filled up as he took in the area ( as I would myself ) We will never forget their sacrifices .

Great shots,

i just got back from Germany, Lux, France, Belgium and Holland myself. The battlefields and cemeteries are everywhere over there. I spent remembrance day at Ypres, Belgium and there was 50 000 ppl present. Was definitely a great trip. I should post some shots from it myself. I was fortunate to meet with a Dutch Colonel and got a personal tour of Volkel airforce base.

I am still based with NATO in Belgium so the offer still stands if any member wants a particular photo of a grave or cemetry pse ask.
