So, what has been your experience with the Vltor CASV-14 handguard rail for the M14/M1A/M305?

After installing the handguard on my Norinco, the accuracy became terrible. Lucky to get 8" patterns at 100m. I found that the handguard was in contact with the stock pretty much continuously from the op-rod guide to the stock cap on both my USGI and Vltor stocks.

I had to remove material from the stock and stock cap to get the proper gap. I did this on my USGI stock as a test before I go at my Vltor. I've only had a chance to shoot to 50m since modding the stock, but I was getting well shaped 1 1/2 -2 " 5 round groups at 50m with Norinco ball.

You can see the paint marks on the handguard from contact with the stock:

USGI stock after sanding and grinding on the end cap. I repainted the sanded area to make it easier to see contact with the handguard. It looks good after testing.

I like it, im having pretty good result with it on my 22 inch poly.

I wanted to put it on my newly aquired shorty but the barrel is overindexed and the damn thing wont install straight.

By the way does anyone know what kind of screw is used on the barrel clamp ? ( the one the fit on the barrel splines, I broke it...)

This is a pic of my best 50 yard groups using this configuration.

Would this be a better idea for a scope mounting system or is something like the Sadlak mount still the way to go?

If your receiver is in spec the side-mount would be the way to go, IMO. The benefit to a mount like the Vltor is that it will go on straight regardless of the receiver geometry.

How much of a gap do you have between handguard and stock on the Poly? Does the stock contact the handguard anywhere?
