Its all Simpletons fault he got me hooked from his pics of his new badass rifle. Anyway Im interested in the VIS upper from Vltor anyone have any opinions on it, aswell as where to buy them. Besides fabsports are there any other Vltor dealers in canada?

I have two VLTOR VIS uppers and I think they are great. A well built, solid and felixible upper receiver platform for the AR. If you are into a monolithic upper the LMT MRP is also a good choice. For all intents and purposes, the two are very similiar, however with the MRP you have to use LMT barrels, while with the VIS, you can use any generic AR barrel, as long as you use a low profile gas block if you want it hidden. The VIS is also a little beefier where it counts. As for dealers, I'm not sure if anyone has any in stock right now as they are hard to find in Canada and usually run in the $800 to $1200 range for the stripped upper alone. I think Questar has a 14.5Noveske Afghan upper w/ VIS left. It won't last, so if you want a solid upper I'd snap that up.

Have used Vltor MUR upper . This is a good forged upper ( original ones were billet ) if you want something different

The Vis is again pretty cool if you want something different. If having a continuous top rail is important for you then have at it. Not much other choices readily available. The LMT MRP comes to mind

Quite frankly I does not bother me that you need to buy their LMT barrels for the MRP. People get all geeked because they see the cost of the LMT barrel. Keep in mind that their barrels should not be compared to "utility grade" barrels. The 10.5 MRP I have is made on a Rock Creek blank

I have DD Lite, KAC FF , URX, etc and I never seem to have an issue mounting optics because its not a continuous rail...even with magnifier etc. The only time it becomes an issue is traditional rifle scope where the ring would bridge the gap. Having said that, that is what the Larue / AMD scope mount takes care off

For the record, the VIS is a great upper and it does not matter its not a true monolitic , like the MRP. It is salt dip brazed from two pieces...useless trivia for the day

See pic below, and you can see the parting line ( top receiver )

I have the VIS-1A. It's a neat upper. It doesn't have QD integrated like a Larue rail however. It's great system but if you ever want a different front rail then you need new upper as well.

MRP does have narrower width rails and does have a drop-in piston conversion.

Aero Precision Inc. now makes a Continuous Optic Platform.

This is the Carbine 7" version. The Mid length 9"? will be available any week now.

$600 for the kit I believe.

edit: Available from Wolverine in an Armalite box........

Here's a pic of my first build that I just finished. Bought the upper off the EE from tshelrud and bought the rest of the parts from Arms East. It seemed easier then the videos of doing a normal one. It matches beautifully with the ATRS lower. I'm going to take some better pics later. Brownell's has them now and I would just import one if I were you.

The ones I've seen look great, I just question the logic of a mono-upper; Most of the damage I've seen to an AR system was absorbed by the upper. Wouldn't it be easier to throw away a $200 upper or a $350 handguard rather than a mono $700 part?

Ahh I see you have the stapler for close-in work. good on you. It's a tough monster to master.

Just submitted an online order through Brownells for the VIS-3 system. My cost $717.20 we just got the paperwork going and I have submitted an application to the gov't for a Import Certificate. Seems to me this import thing won't be to hard, couple of forms and about 30 days and boom I save 400 bucks. I'll keep you guys updated.

I thought they would only ship maximum $100 orders and nothing more, regardless of the paperwork?

If it works though fantastic!!

Keep us posted.

Great. Yes, keep us informed how it goes.
Keep track of all the costs.

Most people are afraid to try to import their own stuff. They think it is Taboo or something. They might get charged just for even asking if they can.

Cheers

edit: How did you get $717 when it lists for $799. Don't forget to tell us that too! :)

UPDATE:

I know some were asking about fees and costs associated with importing. So heres the deal, The upper was $717.20 The export permit fee is 3% of whatever you buy, so the fee is $21.52 then the shipping was quoted at $32.89 ... Total Cost to import this upper will be $771.61 USD ... So after the exchange rate and GST it should be about ~$830

After initially calling around I had one dealer try and tell me that my import fee's would be around the $250 mark, and that I shouldn't bother importing it from brownells cuz it wont be worth my while. (Seemed like a scare tactic) Thats how he tried to justify his outrageous price... or should I say gouge... Needless to say I'm going with Brownells...

So in the end it would appear that the only hassle is timeframe. I'm going to be looking at about a month or so. But hey I also saved a nice chunk of coin and I'm importing something fairly rare...

EDIT: Oh ya as far as the discount from Brownells goes, I spend lots there I've bought all my stuff there aswell as some stuff for my friends. I own my own company too so they set me up with a company account, the discount seems to be about another 10% off everything.
