I was at Wholesale sports in Calgary today and could not believe my eyes (pund intended) when I looked through the Vortex Viper HD 10x42 binoculars.
I compared them to the Swarvoski SLC and the Vortex were just as clear and sharp as the Swarvoski and less than half the price. I asked the guy behind the counter if he/they tried them in low light but he was honest and said that they haven't as of yet. I am absautely sure that I'm going to buy myself a pair.
Does anyone have any experience with these optics? ie; cold, wet, hot, foggy conditions. Also, any guys have experience with their spotting and rifle scopes? I'm really impressed!!!!

Vortex optics is all I use, I have the Razor HD 8X42 binos and they are outstanding. I also have the Diamondback in 10X42 and for $260 they are very good value. I also use Vortex rifle scopes and spotting scopes, fabulous quality for the price!

Haven't looked through a pair of Vortex binos yet, but ended up buying a Vortex Viper. Very impressed with them for the price. My next scope will be a Vortex Viper PST, can't beat the quality for the price point.

Made in China

Wrong. Vipers are made in Japan (I have two pair and they both have the same sticker).

My coworker and I sat in the truck one evening watching elk in the trees across 100yds of clearcut. It was evening with 100% overcast and light rain (every day in the winter here on the coast) and if there was a difference between my 600$ Vipers and his 1800$ Swaros it wasn't obvious. Buy them while they are cheap! ;)

I'm thinking I might go buy a pair of Vortex Viper HD binos tomorrow, I spent some time looking through a few different pairs today and they are very nice for the money. Also looked through a pair of Swarovisions for the first time too, just for fun and WOW!! They are amazing, but at that price they'd damned well better be.

If money were no object, then I'd buy the Swaros, that said I'll buy the Vipers instead and feel like I got a much better deal.

I remember when made in Japan was a put down, kind of like Made In China is today.

So true. Funny thing is most of those same folks from back then are the senior citizens of today holding up traffic going 60 in a 100KMH zone in their Honda accord/ Toyota Corolla. There are some decent quality optics coming out of Asia these days, and that's a hard fact. Haters will always hate.

The fact is that most glass for optics are manufactured in Japan and have for decades, including Swarvoski, Zeiss, and Leica. The Germans don't make their glass it the Japanese who make it for them. Quality of glass depends on quality and quanity of polishing. I'm assuming that the Vortex glass is made in Japan as well. Japan has made some of the best cameras in the world, case in point I just purchased a FujiFilm camera recently and compared it to a Canon of equal value and design and the Fujifilm won hands down! Japan has made many great products, hell they even make the best vehicles in the world which include Honda and Toyota. I feel sorry for those people what they are going through now.
