Vortex Viper 4-16x50 for Tikka CTR?

That I've got covered. Wheeler Fat Wrench is sitting ready in it's case. There's a ring lapping kit at work I should be able to borrow as well. Any recommendations for rings/mounts? I've had good luck with Burris P.E.P.R. mounts, and the Vortex Tactical rings seem well-made.

The Vortex scope is particularly appealing to me because I work for a Vortex retailer, and will probably be able to save about $200 after taxes. I'm trying to keep the price around $700 or less on this scope right now. I can always upgrade to something else in a few years, and stick the Vortex on another gun. Nightforce is going to be one of those "after-I'm-done-my-degree" purchases.

If you're going to spend $700 on a Vortex, look at the Sightron STACs that Mystic Precision is selling right now. Similar price range. Just do some research around this site. I bought the 6-24x50 SIII FFP for around $1600 and it is damn near on par with my $2600 NF. I really, really like it. I like their MOA reticle as well. I have a handful of scopes, higher and lower end, and I would have to say my viper 4-16x50 is the only one I DISLIKE. I'm aware its a cheaper scope, but the glass is kinda blurry and brutal at 16x. Its not even mounted a the moment.

see this is what im talking about with " newer" vortex. What you describe is a manufacturing defect, or a failure. either way send it in and get yourself a new one for free. My 4-16 is crystal clear across all magnifications and ranges, like it should be.

I have a Tikka CTR and I have Vortex PST 2.5-1x32mm FFP MOA illuminated reticle scope on it. I like the reticle on this scope since I like the thicker posts on the outside edges, also the overall weight which when combined with the rifle weighs 9.085 lbs, which is not excessive to carry. I have a Sightron STAC 3-16X42mm MOA scope on a Remington 700. The Sightron has a MOA hash marks non-illuminated reticle with fine lines, so it would not be easy to see in poor lighting conditions and is as such more of a target shooting scope at the range, where as the Vortex is more suitable as both a hunting scope or a DMR scope. The Sightron SIIISS 3.5-10X44 LRIRMOA would be a more comparable to scope the Vortex PST that I have on the Tikka CTR, however one thing to be aware of is that the Sightron scopes that have illuminated reticles have only the center dot illuminated, like with the Leupold VX-R scopes and not the whole reticle like the Vortex PST. If you want a higher magnification scope you might consider the Sightron STAC 2.5-17X56mm scope with an illuminated reticle, however be aware this scope weighs 30 ounces. I do not like scopes with more than 4X low magnification, since I find the field of view to small when trying to zero in on a target. I would also agree with the comments in regards to the clarity of the lens of Sightron scopes.

I very much underestimated the amount of learning I was going to have to do for this purchase. XD
Seems like the 50mm size should be superfluous, so at least I've got that figured out. I'll probably pick something up that's 40-44mm.

Can someone give me the run-down on the pros and cons of First-focal-plane reticles vs. Second-focal-plane reticles?

Give ATRS a call, they build a solid rail and rings. If your on a budget, mystic sells a brand rail(cant recall manufac.....EGW?) that are a little cheaper but good quality, and the tactical rings from vortex are ok to. No need to lap anymore, waste of time.Better to spent more if you can, but with the latter or similiar you'll be ok. Budget $200 minimum for the mounting setup.

basic explination. Reticle changes in size on FFP, and the distance between the numbers on the reticle are consistsant. Ie, if you were looking at a target that measures 2 Mils in your scope in height, and you zoom in or out, the reticle will grow or shrink as the target does, but that target will still be 2 mils, regardless of magnfication.

sFP, reticle doesnt change in size, and is only accurate for measurement on one power, usually the highest.

Benefits and pitfalls to both. Advice would fall for a Ffp, but you can learn just fine with sfp if budget limits.

Hello all,

Recently picked up a Tikka T3x CTR in .308. Very excited to get this set up as a target/tactical rig.
I'm currently on the hunt for a scope for my new Finnish beauty, and I was looking at a Vortex Viper HS 4-16x50, with the Dead-Hold BDC reticle. It seemed like a nice piece of glass, and I've been very happy with the lower-end Vortex scopes I've purchased. Anyone have experience with these (or alternate recommendations)?

First of all congratulation ,Tikka CTR is great !I did not know the new T3x is already n Canada ,were did you buy it ? can you post a pic. of it ?
I have CTR and I pair it with Sightron SIII 6x24x50 FFP MOA
First focal plane is like automatic transmission you change magnification it compensates the bullet drop by shrinking reticle. on max magnification raticle is a bit fat, I personally have no problem with it .Glass is good I can see bullet holes at 200 yards
I also have Vortex PST 4x16x50 SFP MIL on my tikka T3 in 223 and it is good too but I can not see bullet holes at 100 yards some times on dark surface . It is a good scope.
SFP gives you a much thinner reticle at all magnification but you have to adjust bullet drops yourself (which is not a rocket science ) you just have to remember it
I did not really compare it on the same magnification with Saigtron , next Saturday I am going to the range with my friend who just got Vortes PST 6x24x50 FFP MOA. I will let you know my opinion .
