I've been thinking about this type of scope mount for a long time. It solves all my problems with existing VZ 58 scope mounts. Namely, you don't have to remove it to clean the rifle and it gives you access to iron sights.

It replaces the rear sight on the 58. It's basically a greatly improved VZ 58 Scout mount. It's see-through, and incorporates it's own rear sight, similar to the new Sig 556's and others. The rear sight slides in a shallow channel at the rear of the mount and is adjustable for elevation. It tightens down with a screw. Dimensions are very specific as it's made to fit the Aimpoint Micro perfectly and still allow you to remove the top hand guard. Other red dots should work, like Doctor, Trijicon RMR, Bushnell TR-25, etc.

Last fall I physically mocked it up on my rifle to check dimensions and fit. Then I drew and refined it in Google Sketchup. After being burned for over $3000 on Type 97 mounts, I have no desire to make this mount myself. That being said, I would really like to see this mount in production. If you guys like it, say so. Perhaps one of our board manufacturers would take on the project.

Here's the mock up I did up to check dimensions. I made it out of an old scout mount, pieces of a Type 97 mount, cold weld and cardboard.:D This one sits about 1/4 inch higher than the final design. Height above the bore for the unit shown in the Sketchup photos is actually lower than an Aimpoint micro in a Larue tall mount on an AR 15.

Why not use the sighting channel as the rear sight aperture? You could reduce the part count and lower the mount.

If it was bored circular to the proper dimensions you'd end up with a diopter-style sight set up.

i dont know what its called but its a new receiver cover that comes with that s**tty 4x scope and it just has a hollow middle so you can still use iron sights

kind of like the ncstar one for the sks except on the rear sight? seems pretty cool to me if your using a micro dot id buy one

I thought the same thing.

Being on the rear sight and not on the receiver cover eliminates the inherent flaw of the SKS mount.

It seems like an awesome mount, especially for someone who would have real wood on the rifle and not want a railed handguard.

About the T97 adventure, don't you think the VZ58 is well established enough? I just can't see it going prohi- oh wait. Election time.

what was the flaw on the ncstar mount i love mine i just had to grind some metal off the inside so it would actally work instead of making the bolt stuck open

Being the receiver cover at the same time as the mount makes it very hard to return to zero after disassembly. And then there's the back of the receiver cover being hit every time the rifle fires.

Clobersauras' mount doesn't need to be removed to clean the rifle, and it's not directly taking a hit with every shot.

Good ideas, I thought of that, but I was concerned that it would really obstruct the sight picture too much. Of course you could make a notch cut along the bottom of the sight channel and do all adjustments off the front sight. I'd be good with either to tell you the truth.

Also, you can't lower the mount any more than it already is. If you do, you can't get the front hand guard off. The clearance between the front of the Aimpoint and the hand guard vs the rear of the Aimpoint and the shell ejection path is a matter of millimeters.

It's got virtually no sight picture as it is. Can't really hurt it that much.

Great idea.
3 things I don't realy like are:
  1. The iron sight peep idea. It would be way easier to mill out a true to center line threw the rail. If you wanted to use an "iron sight" do to optical failure.
  2. The mount sit's way to high, you need to get this rail lower. With it so high you can not get a consitant check wield.
  3. The 4 side clamping screw idea. Mares the B-Jebous out of 1's rifle in order to get a solid fit. There are other ways how to keep the rail clamped to 1's rifle rear sight pocket with out this.
Other than that u

Cheek weld is just fine if you use a M4 stock adapter.

This isn't a big issue. It's four small marks around the rear sight...with most 58's the finish is marred, scratched anyway. More marks just ad more character....:D

I like it, but I think the original idea of a wide opening with a small aperture in the back is best. With a small aperture through the mount, your FOV will be limited to that aperture, with the rest blocked by the mount. It will be like using a straw to aim your rifle! Other than that I like it, maybe have a couple made up and do some testing to work out the bugs and gauge market interest

That's exactly what I don't want to do. I have too many other projects and prototypes on the go right now. I was kinda hoping someone would pick up the ball and run with it. I don't care about compensation I just want to see it get made.:)
