VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

I find it cool that it takes Canadians and their forum to take the 58 to the next level.

Could be because we canadians are depraved of having a wider selection of guns to choose from, by that I mean if we were able to own any of the other members of the AK family, we might not have this creativity devoted toward the VZ58?

I think I will try to bend steel in the top rail/carrying handle configuration in my pictures. And I should go about making a Romanian grip. That lower handguard is lots of work though.

Version 1 is now complete except I haven't got the quick attach mechanism completely designed(hence no rear mount). Here are some pics of version 1 (prototype). I have noticed about 8 things that need to be fixed so far but hey, we have to start some were. The scope you see is a $hitty red dot that has a much closer centre line that most of the scopes that were presented.

The handle portion might look pretty tight but I have sausage fingers:D

Here is one with the mount in the "cleaning" position.

Let me now your thoughts as we are still early in the design stage.

John, is there any way to get the carry handle offset to the left side of the rifle about 1.5 cm so we can still use the stripper clips?

Wow, I am glad I didn't get slammed like that recent AR thread:D I have had some feedback that I should make it out of aluminum. I don't think aluminum will hold out over the long term and if I was in a "battle zone" the last thing I would want is an aluminum mount and carry handle. I feel I can reduce the weight with some extra machining and not have to resort to aluminum. What are your thoughts? I also need to know the verdict on BUIS. I can make it so the original are still usable or we can add our own. It will be cheaper to use the existing ones and probably more accurate or we can make our own onto the existing design. The only reason the rear mount isn't finished is because I am overlooking the patents on some similar existing ones(AK etc's) to make sure everything is fine and dandy. I should have some pics in about a week of the "finished version". When this does come available to the "public" it will be distributed through VZ58.net AKA Infratech tactical. Please pitch in your ideas now as it will be to late soon! If there is any interest I have access to a lazer engraver and I could look into personalization or even a Gunnutz scope mount if the powers to be are interested:cool:

John,
Looks like it is shaping up to be an excellent design. If it can be modified for the existing irons, no prob with that.
Definitely stay steel.
As to Matt P's comment, I'd love to be able to use stripper clips w/ it. Maybe a thickening and left offset through the loading port plane, similar to the great lamented original ARMS mounts for the M14...?
Whats the plan for the raised portion of the mount? Pict/Weaver rail as well, I hope...?

As for the extra mount, thats easy, as for the stripper clips not so much. Can be done but it will need to be wider and therefore requiring more material and more expense!

Stripper clips are one of my favorite features on the vz58, especially given the fact that 5 round mags empty out quick.

I could be alone on this but personally I'd rather stick with my scout mount than go with a mount that nixed the stripper clips. How much more cost are we looking at? I'd be willing to pay more for an offset version.

I'd rather you mill a channel and drill a hole so that you can (hopefully) make a forward portion that attaches so that we can cowitness a scope and red dot sight.

Similar design to think about...AR gooseneck

Demanding bunch aren't yah's? Well thats what I'm here for. I will get to work on
it. I love CNC machines:D:D:D. Stripper clips it is. As for the forward mount, me thinks that is an available accessory.

Yah. The way to go. Fwd Acc Rail limits the utility for cleaning w/ corrosive; having to re zero the front dot, plus finding a compatible optic for your RD to mount with that sort of magnifier offset, might be a challenge...
Eagerly awaiting Decks 'high offset mag to RD optic (real life...) pics'....:D

Norseman, I intend to do just that when I get a 58L. It should be easy to move the sight back and add a metal airsoft fake can.

If you find any leads to an airsoft fake can let me know eh? Im going to find a smith near me that can set the sight back. Should look nice after :D

The idea is to use scope primarily and if not needed, take it off and be left with a red dot which you would turn on. The forward rail is similar to the AR gooseneck and locks into the rail groove. But whatever. Maybe it won't work. At least we are advancing the 58 one step at a time.

Absolutely...
One small Lib extermination step @ a time.....
In that particular scenario, optics ride high, maybe on the carrying handle bump. If you don't use strippers..., then RD or mag optic. I do like the gooseneck; gets the RD nice and forward.
Just seems to be a PITA, come corrosive cleanin' time.....
Maybe a 'swing out (pivot L or R...) forward goose neck droprail' mount, stiff enough, locked to front, to maintain a min 1MOA after a reset...?
Otherwise, to KISS, you go John....Lovin' it so far.

I hear what you are saying about the gooseneck, but I think if it mates with the regular hump rail nicely, it should do. Anyhow, have you checked out the handguard rail system? That can't be easy for cleaning. With my idea, you spin gooseneck locking disc and off it comes. I don't want to see any optics on the carrying handle. It is too high then.
