VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

Yeah, the hand rail system, in my mind, has the same drawbacks as the gooseneck...everything has to come apart for cleaning corrosive. If I hadn't thought it was an issue, I would have grabbed a set, even at 1/2 the cost of the rifle, before Palnick(sp?) sold out...
I'm pretty anal about stuff I hang on my guns...if it isn't functional, and doesn't handle the regular cleaning routine, 'It sucks'.
We wouldn't be having this conversation, if 1120 rounds of non corrosive ammo was available for +/-$200.00....
In my mind, strip the gun, don't disturb the optics/sights, and you are GTG. This baby needs a reddot; if you need magnification, you're stretching the limits of the ammo (not the gun...) we primarily shoot(VZ58S).
YMMV...

Absolutely...
One small Lib extermination step @ a time.....
In that particular scenario, optics ride high, maybe on the carrying handle bump. If you don't use strippers..., then RD or mag optic. I do like the gooseneck; gets the RD nice and forward.
Just seems to be a PITA, come corrosive cleanin' time.....
Maybe a 'swing out (pivot L or R...) forward goose neck droprail' mount, stiff enough, locked to front, to maintain a min 1MOA after a reset...?
Otherwise, to KISS, you go John....Lovin' it so far.

Off topic, but I just noticed you're located in Mission.

You go shooting off Sylvester road at all? I've left more than a few gratuitous piles of ejected 7.62 and spent stripper clips in that first clearcut area in the woods just past the little pond :D

Any other good places for shootin in the area?

I don't have my cad computer here this weekend so I cant post pics, but this is what I am thinking about. A three sided bracket that makes the goose neck. I could hold three rails and partially cover the upper portion of the hand guard; eliminating the need for the fancy hand guard. The most practical way I can think of to do it would be have a barrel mount front pivot bracket. It would clamp onto the barrel and have a pivot pin through it for the goose neck\tri rail mount. The rear portion of it could extend into the existing design with a quick attach mount or single locating screw(for cost purpose). It could lie in a slot as previously mentioned A slot can be cut as suggested to allow for visual clearance.
What do you think?

Bit farther east, past Hatzic and north. Haven't been out that way shooting for years though...
One of the reasons a CZ 858 is moving up on my 'to acquire' list. Problem is, the chrome bore long barrels seem few and far between...:(

Finished. I am exhausted but happy. Now I will rest and wait for pictures of other attempts at the elusive top rail.

^looks good, but

1) how does the rail hold zero after a cleaning?

2) how is it fastened at the gas block and rear sight?

3) no stripper clips :(

It just rests flush on the gas block. 2 set screws secure it at the rear sight leaf pivot holes. It is so tight and tough that I carry the rifle holding it by the rail alone , no problem ..... and , yes , it holds zero due to a very tight tolerances at the 2 mounting points , front and rear.
Stripper clips ????? What for:rolleyes: , I've got tons of mags:D

Tested it today and it looks like it will work fine. I am going to have to machine a deflection angle on the under side of the handle. Out of 100 rounds I had 2 fail to clear but I think the deflector will fix this.

I have 1.25" of clearance above the bolt. I would have to say anything less wont work IMHO. I will get the deflector machined into it as well as the forward pieces tomorrow. I finished the quick attach design and I think you guys are going to like it. Very repeatable and very sturdy. On a side note if anyone finds a good source for non corrosive ammo that would be very cool. I have cleaned this damn thing more times than I can count with this development stuff.

That is great. It confirms what I thought about keeping the handle away from the bolt carrier. Slanting the handle is a good idea. You are doing good work. I like the replacement top handguard idea too.
