VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

    Votes: 166 7.7%
  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

KAC dude... DoS accepts no crappy substitutes.

Some Colt too.

Mark -- yes it may look ### but damn it does a better job than DynCorp suburbans clearing folks out of the road :)

Working on new pistol grip

I have made the rough oak blank and now need to fit and finish. It has a mild thumbrest and is one inch longer. It is roughly 1/4 thicker, except where the thumb rests. The shape has been changed. Suggest other shapes?

This has to be the longest thread I've seen on a discussion board, does the fact that I'm still enjoying it say something about the thread or me:confused: Seriously, keep it up -unless you're Kevin B, then for God's sake keep it down.

To answer a question:
As far as I know, there is no magazine loading tool and I'm sure the AK one wouldn't fit. The bolt carrier is the loader. So use the rifle to load magazines in advance using stripper clips.

SKS has won wars, the 858 is a piece of ####...thats IT!

Yes it was the sks that single handedly won the war. It had absolutely nothing to do with anything else. What A load of b.s. It's like saying that the M16 is a piece becuase it lost the vietman war.

I've owned an sks and handled the 858 and there is no comparison to the build quality, accuracy, and trigger pull. The Cz wins hands down in all of those. That comes from a fan of sks. If you want a cheap and reliable rifle to mess around with then the sks is it. If you want a good quality military rifle then I'd pass.

Honestly, with the small amount of VZ58's and CZ858's in the country.....mabey a couple hundred....tops....and the amount of problems with them posted on here, they have a track record comparable to Norinco.....:)
Throttlemonkey who says on page 1:
I have owned both. 858 destroys the SKS in every category except purchase cost.
Also has a thread Bring My CZ back to life!

I've had problems with mine as well. I still love it. And the fact is these problems seem to be rare as I see it. Your bound to get some Lemons espeshally with the new S/A design. I made my statement with a working CZ/VZ in mind. I'm sure Throttlemonkey did as well. I think future imports of the CZ/VZ will have the bugs worked out anyway for every one getting one whenever they are availible again.

I'm hoping with the popularity of the first batch of 858's that someone will put out a synthetic stock for it. The only thing that has held me back from buying one is that fiber board they used. That and I don't have the bank roll for it yet.

My CZ is on it's way so I haven't had time to play with it yet but I can't see how anything would be easier than an SKS to strip for cleaning.

Plus this comparison is apples to oranges, the SKS is a end of WWII era rifle, and the CZ is a cold war era rifle, different technologies and totally different design.
