VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

I still want an 858, guess I'll tell the wife they're only $350 ;) .

LOLOL!!! I had a guy at one of the local shops here write on the box of a new rifle I just couldn't resist, "THIS IS NOT A GUN" Just to easy the explaining I had to do once I got home. :D

P.s It actually did help !!

Reloading (recharging ?) a standard SKS with clips is more tedious than slapping on a fresh mag.

Just try to reload your SKS when there's still a round in the chamber (sometimes necessary in tact rifle ipsc-style matches)... a pain in the azz.
The VZ/CZ loads both ways. With a mag or a stripper clip. Both ways are good by me!!

858/VZ vs Norc SKS? Quality, performance are about par and equal, 858 is a hair more accurate usually.

Now 858/VZ vs Yugo SKS? No comparison (and yes I have both), the Yugo beats it in every category.

That's interesting. I was generally under the impression that for the most part, SKS rifles were commonly mass produced and therefore somewhat lacking in terms of accuracy compared to the VZ 858. Which is probably mass produced as well, but. I'm sure you know what I mean.

I've always liked the SKS, however I've heard people slag it for not being a very good rifle performance wise. So I'd like to hear opinions on what the best sort of SKS there is to buy.

I would pick my VZ58 over an SKS. I love that thing. With irons, I'm able to consistently get a 1" group at 50 yards.

As far as I've heard, there's only been about a half-dozen people so far complain about issues with their VZ58s or 858s. Let's face it, more people post new topics on the forums about fixing problems than they do about how they went out to the range and had no problems at all. I think the "hit and miss" depiction of the 58/858 on these forums is completely unfair.

CZ858 case separation

Has anyone else had any case separations while shooting a CZ858? I was using American Eagle ammo It did this the other day and the top of the case was stuck in the chamber....I didn't know this so I took it to the place where I bought it and they found the top of the case, said they would remove it and check for small burs in the chamber.

I picked it up today and went shooting again and it happened three more times in 100 rounds. BUT every time tonight the broken top of the case out stuck on the new cartridge....obviously that new round would not be chambered. A bit of pulling and twisting and the broken brass tip would come off.

I am going to bring it back tomorrow and ask that they take another look at it because they didn't fix the problem. What else could it be? Thanks guys!

I love mine. They are milliraty rifles. Maybe brass is too soft for the rifle and it needs steel? I am guessing here. I know next to nothing aobut ammo.

haha...that's actually what the place I bought it at said. Then when I was at the range tonight and I repeated that to the guys there, they got so mad they were almost jumping up and down defending Federal/American Eagle.

Is Federal/American Eagle the only type you have tried? Get a box of a different manufacturer and see if it is the brass "softness" that is the problem. If the brass does not split then the Federal stuff it either too soft or it is a bad batch. If the different brass also splits, then I stand by my original assumption.

Yup AE is the only stuff I have tried. I have not yet bought a box of the Sellier & Bellot, Czech Republic ammo but I really wanted to shoot my CZ so I just got the store soft core stuff. The Sellier & Bellot, Czech Republic stuff that you can buy here is steel cased, and maybe that is the difference.

I've had bad experiences with the Fed 7.62x39- and actually with the win white box as well- better off with commie surplus....cheaper and milspec to boot.

Does the CZ-58 or 858 have some sort of tunable gas port? On VZ 52/57, there is a way to adjust the gas system to take into account the different ammo lots.
Is there such a commodity on the CZ-58?
PP.

Should post pics of both the seperated brass and the brass that did not seperate, sounds like it is extracting before the pressure has dropped sufficently. Where is the brass seperating exactly? Also what grain is the AE?
