VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

With a few more bucks I'd get another M305 instead of getting an "AK-like" CZ858. And I can take my SKS out hunting deer without being busted by the cops for carrying an "AK-like" assault rifle in the bush.

Except AK47, nothing beats SKS, especially Norc SKS, in this calibre. Period.

Well the SKS was replaced with the advent of the AK47. The czech's were allowed to use their 58's instead of ak47's when under the iron curtain. it must have been decent.

I stand by my statement. the CZ/VZs blow any SKS out of the water IMHO

Bowie I have heard this well. I have never had problems with any ammo, and I have heard that the czech surplus is quite a bit hotter than AE.

Should post pics of both the seperated brass and the brass that did not seperate, sounds like it is extracting before the pressure has dropped sufficently. Where is the brass seperating exactly? Also what grain is the AE?

I should have taken pictures but I didn't. Basically is was separating just before the case necks down. The separated case looked like a 10mm case. IIRC they were 127 grain.

Ok, I need to jump in here. The 858's as are all Communist guns blessed with oversize chambers. This is not a flaw, it is to insure that all ammo from all of the various countries that made the stuff will fit and fire.
North American ammo is made to SAMII specs and not Combloc specs.
Sorry to the Federal loving guys but Federal brass is one of the softest out there, thats not a bad thing, it actually allows this ammo to be used were more brittle brass could not be, however, even it cannot stretch to accomidate the long chambers of your 858. When you take it back they will tell you again to stop using Federal ammo, there is nothing wrong with your rifle!!

Does the CZ-58 or 858 have some sort of tunable gas port? On VZ 52/57, there is a way to adjust the gas system to take into account the different ammo lots.
Is there such a commodity on the CZ-58?
PP.

No. There is not.

I 2ed the "stop useing federal moshion". I had a similer problem with my AG42B when useing NORMA ammo. I switched to BELL and it never happened again. The only thing I've shot out of my CZ 858 is the Crosive Milsurp stuff and Sellor & Bellot sp's when hunting. Both work fine with no probs at all.

It is the "brass" issue and it will, probably, repeat with Sellier Bellot brass-cased ammo as well. Whoever posted about the oversized chamber is spot on. The rifle AND the Federal ammo are both OK, just dont work together very well. Both have their purpose, but not a common one. With th SB ammo the problem (especially on full auto) was the bottom was being torn apart right behind the groove. The case in semi auto (full auto none the less) is subjected to different strains than in bolt action. M16/AR15 rifles were designed to shoot brass, so it is a different issue.

VZ58 underfolder?

I'm not a big fan of the VZ's sidefolder. Is there any way to put on a underfolder? I can't remember the CGNrs name on here making SKS/AK47 clones, but this would be easy compared to that?

I can put 90% of my shots in a paper plate at 200m with my SKS open sight, can CZ/VZ do it? SKS beats CZ/VZ any time at the range. If you give me a CZ for free, I'll just sell it and turn around buy two SKS.

The fact your local LEO's are ignorant dumb asses is not something to use in a comparison like this, the same would probably happen if your SKS had a pinned 30 rounder and a pistol grip.

Coming from the guy that had to buy a second one because his first one was a lemon.........:p
I liked my VZ58 for the short time I had it, it was an OK little carbine. They are pretty low quality though and certainly not worth $600 IMHO. If they were the same price as SKS then the comparision would be more sensible.
But based on price and quality, the VZ is a lump compared to a Yugo SKS.

That would be pretty slick, if there was an adaptor to fit the two together.

If there is any machinists here that could make one up, I would provide the material, Ive got about 5 nice aluminum blocks that would be perfect for such task, or would steel be preferable?

Also since the 858 dosn't use a rotating lock system with primary extraction the case suffers more (I have a article in my small arms review on the vz-58 and they had some similar problems with brass cases in their test of the gun),I could post the whole article if you would like.

you could but the lenght of pull would be too long as you would have to attach the ak47 rear trunion to the back of the vz58 to add have the folder that would add about 2 "

the folding ak trunny is also hollow as it fits inside the sheet metal akm recievrs so you would need to machine a complete trunny big pita

My first one might have been a lemon, but my SKS I had was much worse....much worse, it wouldn't even hit paper at 50 yards (It was an SKS-D though). I have shot other SKS's and have found my cZ to be a better gun.

Rolling rock- I was consistently hitting clay pigeons out 150 yds with my cz. I have a friend who was there with his scoped AR-180B, and he was amazed how accurate the czech piece of crap was.

For what it's worth, my wife has shot off 8 boxes (160 rds) of American Eagle lead core, brass case ammo (indoor range requirement) in her 858 without a single FTL or FTE or case separation.
