VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

For me, it's no surprise that that type of receiver can hold 308 recoil. Receiver, though, has to be a little longer (than the regular receiver for 7.62 x 39 or 5.56). It would be interesting to know if the one in 7.62x51 is also denominated "Sa" (samopal=smg=full auto), cause if it is, then it's the ultimate proof of the strenght of that receiver. Also, I wonder if the bolt locks into the barrel or still in the receiver. Mean looking straight mag, nice gun altogether.

The bullpup, though, is new to me and it's a nice surprise. I didn't see it before, I wonder if they issued this to troops.
Apparently, they engineered and put (part of) the trigger group in a separate box which replaces the foregrip. I think the hammer, full auto sear and some other stuff still had to stay in the receiver. I wonder what they did with the selector switch, probably it's the thinghie between the pistol grip and trigger guard.
Note the slick shield over the bolt carrier on the left side to protect the shooter from hot gases, I like that.
I don't know if the rail and carry handle are original from that era.
They had to slightly cut the pistol grip at the bottom probably to make room for the mag, but see how much cooler it looks. Interesting to know if anybody attempted this cut on the pistol grip (just for looks) on the regular VZs and CZs recently imported in Canada.

The whole thing is so cool looking.
I don't remember seeing so much common sense when somebody tried bullpuping something. Finesse and technique...
I'm sure the Russian designers had to learn a lot from this...

How much for the black side folder Palinak ? the second one from the bottom.

I think the majority are too straight for use with iron sights., including the underfolder unfortunately:(

That one has the push button...

Re: Mod pix
I am a 58 purist, but I am weakening.

That forward grip makes taking out the mag somewhat trickier I will bet.

RE:
Poll Options
Which of the two have you had a Striker problem with?
CZ 858
VZ 58
Both CZ 858 and VZ 58

WHY NOT another option

No problem detected thus far?

I hear Ya Deckard.
I love the original look as well.
But for the price of these rifles you can always have more then one. Keep one stock to look at :) and build one up for more practical and comfortable shooting. A bigger grip is definitely better then the original. Different stocks for different people. The new folders and under-folders are longer then the original, more practical for taller people. The forward grip gives you a 100% better control of the riffle and for sure you have to position it so the mag comes out easy and fast. The above mentioned stock is not a folder but the 10 dollar SKS fibreforce rubber butt pad fits it perfectly. I also found the magpul stock quite comfortable on the 858.

Striker problem? What striker problem. 3 crates later not one problem. :)

well i hope to add my bit to this,
the spring that we all know that is a pain to put on i figured out the easy way how to get it on by yourself and within 30 seconds if you do it right.

put your cleaning rod together, put on the patch end peice. put the spring over the cleaning rod. next take the wire hook thing and put it onto the patch peice.( you will see it will fit perfectly as there is 2 dimples to hold it on)

run the spring down with one hand while holding the rear cap with your waist. pinch it and put that little stopper on, then slowly release your grip.

deckard, a tire iron out of your trunk works good too, just need to give it a quick run with a file.

The pistol grip will match the colour of both regular furniture and tanned, if you'll ever want to switch. Forward grip shape is interesting, probably it took a lot of work.
First thought when I saw the flash hider was Deghtyarev 27(29):) but that is quite longer than the one in the picture. I didn't know what the UK 59 was:confused: I had to google it. I wonder if that flash hider increases recoil.

The look of the whole gun with flash hider (if it didn't have the vertical foregrip) would be screaming for bipod, a high one to accomodate the magazine.

Interesting look... do it yourself project...:)
I hope we'll get rid of these stupid gun laws and one day I'll be able to post pics of something inspired by that EZB:eek: but made by me.
