VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

Yea I don't really want the scout scope mount, for some reason it just doesn't spin my wheels. Is it easy to mount the kalinka one?

cz858 forward handgrip

Hello all,
My only real irk with mounting the scoutscope mount on the gas block is that one must remove the rail in order to remove the forward handguard to access the piston. I know there is minimal loss of zero from doing this (usually a click or two on my red dot next time at the range), but it is a pain in the ass, especially since i must clean it every time with the corrosive ammo.

Now, has anyone modified a handguard, or knows where to buy one, that can be removed with the weaver rail piece in place? I was thinking of dremeling a relief in the steel of the guard to make it possible, but there are a lot of brazed together pieces in there that might fall apart. Probably look hideous too.

Any ideas?
Thx

Does the handguard have to come appart in order to clean the piston?

I saw a rail that fits over the action on thier site but not in the product line, is it any good or even available?

Well, I already use the scout rail, but the problem remains the same for the tactical handguard: having to remove the optic (and the accompanying minor loss of zero) to access the gas system. (true for either product) Mostly i just hate having to tote about an allen key.

Another question for ya vz junkies: I have had two cz858's and both don't feed softips (i've tried a number of brands). They will pick them off the right side of the double stack and feed them ok (albeit with smushed tip and gouged brass). The left side mag feeds jam completely (too steep a feed angle i figure). Is there any 7.62x39 JHP available in Canada:confused: ? I know its a piss poor replacement for softpoints as a hunting round, but its an improvement.

Cheers

1) Yes. The upper hand guard covers the piston. It swings from the rear up to be removed

2) True, scoutscops doesn't show the vz model on their site. However, you can buy them from marstar.ca or wolverine supplies. About $100. Throw a red dot on, and you're rocking. Only annoyance is that the stock comb is a bit low. My Millett RD is 2.6" above line of bore (centre to centre).

I am thinking of getting one of those infratek crane stock adapters because I see that they mount the stock tube parallel to the bore (can anyone confirm this?????????????)

Oops, i misinterpreted your second point.

Do you mean the side mount systems? If so, they require gunsmithing to bolt on the side of the receiver. I haven't seen them available. A couple of dudes on this thread seem to have the in on these things.

Bump

Seems that in order to mount on optic via the side you must weld on some 'meat' in order to have enough metal to drill/tap for a rail and clear the indentation on the side of the reciever. Apart from that, mounting an AK-style rail and optic appears to be rather staraight foreward and everyone who has gone though the process seems to stand by their decision
