VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

Anyone has shot soft point ammo with the VZ?

Sent mine back to marstar, cause it wasn't taking softpoint ammo and according to them, the vz-58l with the chrome bore only take military surplus ammo.

yes, the cartrige sticks out a bit from the chamber. Marstar did test soft point ammo on my rifle and came to the conclusion that the vz-58l only accepts military surplus ammo.

really? marstar said the VZ58L ONLY takes surplus ammo.

my CZ858 takes commercial ammo.

i also have a vz58L and it mangles soft point ammo pretty good.

Both the brass casing gets mangled by the receiver, and the cartrige sometimes jams when the soft point gets snubbed against the feeding ramp.

I polished the feeding ramp on mine which partially fixed the jamming but the brass was still mangled (if you're interested in reloading).

IMO these rifles were designed to shoot FMJ steel cased cartriges and that's what we should feed them.

I also don't think it's relevant that a cz858 has no problems digesting the soft stuff since the vz58L isn't a cz858 with a chrome bore, it is actually a long barreled vz58 (hence the L designation) both made by cz hermex...

actually matt it does if dc5 wants to hunt small game so therefore he needs to use commercial ammo , knowing CZ858 as no problem he may want to switch.

that confirms that the VZ-58L doesn't like soft point ammo.

I need it to shoot soft point ammo, so i can use it in the winter at the indoor shooting range, because the steel core ammo will damage their back plates.

^ IIRC the milsurp stuff doesn't have a steel core. The case is steel and the bullet is jacketed.

Again IIRC the only 7.62x39 steel core stuff used to come from china & we get czech stuff here.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

shiet! haha I didn't think of that when I saw sparks fly off this box of tiles I shot  guess I got a lil too carried away/excited to stop and think
