VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

Great work Marshall. I just think there should be no metal anywhere near the bolt carrier. I've seen enough brass come out to be confident on this one. In this picture I made, it will have a spring loaded latch at rear for locking. It locks into a block that is held to the receiver with a longer stock bolt. While we are at it, a bayonet mount locking rail would be cool too. Here, a flashlight is attached.

Yeah, this one takes away the incentive to use the piece as a carrying handle, and stress out the small pins up front...
Do you have enough rail up top for BUIS, or are you able to use the existing irons (see through mount)?

I plan on making it so the Iron sights can still be used. I have a quick detach assembly on the back that I am working on for ease of cleaning. I think the pins will hold out as I planned to use hardened dog point set screws that would fit into the existing site ramp pin holes and I have seen similar setups used before. This would also allow for "centering" of the part.It will probably be CNC'd so I could put some contours resembling hand grips on the inner bottom of the front section.

You're makin' me all warm and fuzzy, John.
This sounds like one smokin' piece of kit, and I'm in, if you go to production.

I just finished with the muzzle break project so now I am ready for something else. I will produce one, for me regardless. If there is enough interest I will make batches of 10. I quoted material today and have started to block up some protoypes.. I would like people's input during the design stage to get the best design possible. I am leaning heavily to all steel construction due to the fact it is now a handle and a mount? Any relevant pictures of similar style mounts would be appreciated.

Any info on possible scopes, Name etc. Would be good to have dimensions now.
I like the backup sights idea. My thought was just to bolt on an after market rail. Good idea or bad Idea?

I am suggesting the rear rail be 8 inches long.

sample optic...

2-6x28

1 inch tube
2.7-2.6 inch eye relief
6.75 inch length
8.5 oz net weight
45-21 feet FOV & 1/2 inch click value @100 yards

Mounting info:

Front ring distance: 30mm (1.18 inch)
Rear ring distance: 24mm (0.94 inch)
Overall distance: 80mm (3.15 inch)

Rail over the handguard as well or just at the rear? Tips for LOCAL rail purchase? Front or rear sight adjustable?

Rail over the front as well- like to get that Eotech far forward.
Front site adjustable for elevation, rear for windage and range, maybe a ghost and medium aperture...?

Local rails through Wolverine; a number of the manufacturers listed in their 'accessories' section have rail sections...

I'd like to here from the 58ers about that. But I'm most interested in

for the rail...but I see now sold out.

You might torqs screw this to on save steps. Front or rear sight adjustable? Well if you follow my carrying handle idea, I'd say no. The sight radius is too short for that. If things go down, the rail can be taken off and the regular rear sight replaced.

I think the rear should lock in place with a push button something like a pistol.

Well, I was looking at this at sjhardware and found this:

(I dont have a fancy drawing program, so if anyone can do this up for a VZ58 ?)

I was thinking of removing the front and rear sight, install a muzzle break

with a rail that mounted between the reciever and stock, and the front mounted to the barrel just ahead of the gas block. Have a built in shell deflector then mount Flip up AR sights or an eotech or a scope?

Heres a couple that attache to the barrel...

I wouldn't have it going all the way forward to the barrel, too much of a span to keep rigid and what will happen to groups when the barrel heats up?
I would make it from the rear of the receiver to the sight block, keep it low .
Personally I would not bother with stripper clips as I am fine with mag changes as on my Ak's.

I say we make something that goes from the stock all the way to the gas block, and we devise a handguard that opens sideways for cleaning so the rail doesn't have to be moved every time we want to clean the rifle.
