VZ-58s and more...FAQs are Post 1

Q: Considering this monster thread, what do you think of the VZ-58 type rifle?

  • It is a beauty as it comes, and a must have, since it drives Libs bonkers.

  • It is best pimped out and dressed up, a far cry from an NDP convention.

  • It is true it was the first cool gun in the Cdn. market for a long while, but I'll pass.

  • It makes me think of snide remarks, as I am a gun snob and the 58 is affordable.

In over 400 pages of this thread somebody probably already thought of this so if this is something that's already been discussed just ignore it.

I was thinking, there's all of these .22LR conversion kits for AR15s in .223Rem. They're a great way to practice with your AR without paying for .223 ammo. If somebody wants to be my hero, they can make a similar thing to the Ceiner for the Vz58 that would shoot 7.62x25mm Tokarev pistol ammo without permenantly modifiying the rifle. If some old eastern bloc SMG mags could be modified to work with this system I think that would be pretty neat.

What do y'alls think?

how much cheaper is the 7.62x25mm ammo than 7.62x39?
7.62x39 happens to be dirt cheap already:)
would the x25 be noticeably quieter or no?

It's been a while since I bought 7.62x25 but I last paid about $100/1000rnds (10 cents per shot).

7.62x39mm goes for about $200/1120rds (about 17.9cents per shot) in my neck of the woods.

I've never shot a 7.62x39mm pistol or a 7.62x25mm carbine, but I can't see how the pistol cartridge WOULDN'T be quieter, all else being equal.

Additionally, if the construction of the conversion kit I am proposing were robust enough, 7.62x25mm sub-machine gun ammo could be used. The SMG loadings are considered to be unsafe to shoot out of 7.62x25mm pistols of all descriptions and thus it is not imported in any quantities worth mentioning.

But now I'm starting to get carried away with myself; I was just dreaming this idea up to make the Vz58 a little cheaper and quieter and less recoil-y to practice with.

Story made short, i bought my cz-858 from Epps a few years ago. The salesman also sold me a foam bore cleaner. I've been using this since then. I have yet to see a spot of rust after cleaning. I've used a couple of agents, all foam, depending on the local stores inventory.

Anyways, this is just so you know that you don't need to windex and rinse your rifle in hot water. just foam it up, brush through and pass patches until its white.

Ps. right now im using Thompson/Center T-17™ Foaming Bore Cleaner

What about the gas system?

Sorry to disrupt the peace, serenity
and the atmosphere of deep meditation and prayer
from this thread.

I wanted to post some pix of a nice rail/mount system
(everybody talks about rails in some other threads).

It works with these mounts:

That is just a basic AK mount with AK side rail. I have one in my shop, it was the starting point for the MultiMount Rail. The problem is eye relief sux on magnified optics and the shells still hit the scope bell. That AK mount and any others will work on the MultiMount rail and sit lower.

Edited to add AK mounts are higher then SVD mounts and can only be used in one eye relief position so be aware of that when buying. For the VZ58 SVD mounts are better IMHO.

1 and 3 look pretty fun palinak, 3 especially.

One thing to note on the UTG unit is that they are made for airsoft and the one I saw was pretty soft aluminum, I would expect some deformation and loosening over time with it, it is a lot lighter then the belomo unit though. It is still a bit high and far back.

Lector the Belomo one you pictured would work very well on the rail on your rifle, although it is an AK mount it is gonna be lower then the UTG IIRC. Be a good setup for a red dot.
