Is this the mount they sent you ?

If it is it will come very close to the ejection port, maybe too close, no problems of course if it is offset, but it does not look like it is.

The SVD mount works for red dots and compact scopes,it is well back from ejecting cases, I did not have to do any work on it, only on the rail. This is the rail.

Like you I got two rails, I have now installed the other one which I got from kalinka, this is the right one for the SVD mount and needs no metal removing, it is just a bit deeper at the closed end, and allows the stop on the mount to lock into the recess in the rail properly. The other one works fine, but I was bored last weekend.

What rail do you have ? Post a pic if possible.

The hardest part of the project for me was getting the right parts. They all say what you need is this and that without the faintest idea of what they are talking about. all they seem to be interested in is taking your money. I had to send two mounts back before I finally got the one I needed to do the job.

Don't even bother trying to call Kalinka, when I called I got an irate woman who was pissed about getting calls for "some internet company".

I have the same rail as you and the mount you show in the pic is what i got.
I have place it beside my gun and your right it is very close but am going to cut the weaver rail back flush with the mount which should be good. The one advantage with your mount is its lower then mine. Even though there both low profile the SVD mounts are lower the the AK/vepr low profile mounts.

And your right its hard finding info on these mounts which made me paranoid that I mite get the wrong one.
I'll take pics while am working on it and post them but only after I range test it.
I dont want anyone my way if it does not work
Thanks again for all the help and ideas Flabalob

It's good that you have the same rail as I can give you some details that you might find usefull. It is a bit awkward drilling the mounting holes in the rail from the top side because it is dished where you need to drill it, so If I were you I would drill it from the back side, this way you can be certain it will be accurate.

The top of the ' swallow tail ' of the rail is flush with the top of the steel bar behind it, the rail will need filing down to achieve this. The total height of the modified rail is 11/16ths of an inch, this will allow the lower two reciever pins to remain uncovered. I recommend that the rail mounting holes are drilled 6/ 16ths from either end, 1 1/4" from the back end, and 18/16ths from the front end. If you drill out the front closed end of the rail before mounting it, as can be seen in the picture you will be able to use both AK mounts and SVD mounts.

I drilled the screw holes in the reciever 13 /16ths of an inch down from the top, this places the screws below the internal reciever rails. Drill the reciever and then hold the rail in place and mark from the inside of the reciever with a sharp bent nail or something similar ( colour the back of the rail with a marker pen ). I used an 8-32 tap and allen key button head screws. I used non permanent locktight to secure the screws so I could remove it at a later date if I wanted. It is necessary to grind down the allen key to about 1/2 " deep as there is not enough room inside the reciever to be able to use it as standard.

If you use the above measurements you should not have problems.

I think you could lower your mount without too much trouble, but I would be tempted to get them to send the mount you ordered in the first place.

PS I have given you a slightly different placement position of the second screw from the front than mine is placed at, this is because on mine it is very close to the sear release lever and is awkward to screw in. You could probably leave this screw out altogether with out any problems.

Awesome this is very helpful :)
I think I'll have to use three screws one in front and two in the rear since am mounting it further back and dont want to interfer with my trigger.
Drill the gun will be easy, fitting and taping the rail will be the hard part. But I think I can handle it being a Weapons tech and all ;)

Also I found out the SVD and Ak Mount can be slid back forth to some degree to ajust for Eye relief. which may just solve my ejection clearance!

Thanks again Flabalob

Mounting the rail further back would limit your scope options. With the rail mounted in the position I have mine mounted it is possible to use an over the reciever SVD mount for a red dot or compact scope. With an AK mount like the mounts fitted to the POSP scopes, a full sized scope can be used as this system has the scope placed further forward to give the correct eye relief. The SVD rails on SVD rifles are mounted futher forward than AK's/ my 858, that's why the mounts for these are not offset forward.

The back end of your mount should have a sealed end, this is to stop it sliding forward under recoil, it has to be slid right the way forward to lock it in position. If you move it back you will find that it will move forward no matter how tight you adjust the tension.

I am told that the the POSP scopes have an approximate height of 85mm from the centre of the swallow tail to the centre of the lens, this would put them at, or a fraction lower than the red dot that I have on my rifle.

Once you fit the rail you are stuck with it in that position, unless you don't mind having a reciever full of holes. I am sure the scope below would fit my rifle as well as the red dot.

Just about done my mounting job :) the holes are drilled and taped and am going to put the finishing touches on tommorow. It was tricky since this is my firts time mounting a sope mount like this but sofar I have not screwed up. my rail is going to be lower and further back then yours but not in the way of any thing . also I did not mill off the sides so its going to be wider too.
i'll get some pics of its saterday to show you my job

Well am all done, it looks great and I did not even screw up.
Hats off to you Flobalob because it was not easy and I could not of done it with out your help. pics coming very soon! and I still got to get a red dot for it.

Glad you got it sorted. I bet you could do it again easily now you know what to do.:) Hurry up with the bloody pics.
