It did try it like that at first. It works the same and it's alot more stable and comfortable way to carry the gun... but my strap isn't really long enough to lift the gun to my shoulder and still have strap going around my back and under my arm. It would work fine I'm sure if your strap was long enough. It works fine for me to have it slung under my arm while standing and then slip my arm out when I go to shoot, just more tedious and not as fast in a clinch situation... but fast enough for the range I suppose...
